Oddly, this title was fetched from a 16/44.1 master. Perhaps one of the Stereophile guys can chime in? I don't disagree with your findings. To me the Norah Jones SACD does sound better than the redbook CD. The SACD vs the redbook layer may not be a valid comparison since it may be intentionally have been degraded. Digital sections of my player? Who knows. But then again I haven't made this comparison since I upgraded the output section my player. I now just listen to the music.
Follow Ups:
If the better sound you hear is from the stereo layer, then you're mostly just demonstrating that the DSD path sounds better, even given the same resolution information. In my case, the stereo DSD portion of my Lexicon RT-10 just sounds better than the AES digital output to my Lexicon MC-12B-EQ processor. So while the stereo information may originate from the same master, the SACD pathway sounds better in my equipment. If the better sound you hear is from the multi-channel layer, then you are hearing true high-resolution, from the analog masters. It clearly sounds far and away better than the redbook, although I would concede that the change in the soundstage may put off some. By spreading out the front soundstage, it has less punch - sounds more diffuse. It is silky smooth, organic, and definitely worth the price if you are setup for multi-channel.
per Stereophile many months ago the master tape was a 16/44.1. No analog tape was ever involved.
The multi-channel stuff was done from the analog master, IIRC. The stereo DSD was taken from the CD stuff.
My friend had the Norah Jones SACD. I just have the regular CD. He brought it over quite a while back. I don't recall the redbook layer of the hybrid being degraded but I also only listened to a song or two quite a while back. After hearing it even vs. my regular CD, I did not feel the need to go re-buy it on SACD.
