I just an NBC news report of CD sales and how they have been impacted by song downloads. They talked about how many record stores are closing their doors with the advent of mp3 players and internet downloads. That's great news for the vast majority of music lovers but how about us folks who appreciate the highest quality sound available. Why else would someone like me fork over $2K for an SACD player? So will it get to the point that the only music available will be the compressed crap (sorry) that one can buy on line? I own an iPOD and love it but that's the technology I turn to when exercising. When I really want to "hear" my music, I sit in the sweetspot and listen.
My local Tower had an extra 10% off the reduced total last Tues. and Wed. and a friend of mine sent me a coupon for an addional 5% off good until the 14th. I visited 3 stores over the past several weeks and much of the good hi-rez stuff is gone. I did pick-up Chesky Records McCoy Tyner's 'New York Reunion' on Wed. for $11.96 and a couple of CDs I wanted for less than that.
I picked up a couple of pieces yesterday but I'll go back in a couple weeks to check things out again. One guy told me they MIGHT be shipping more stuff in from a California warehouse to unload.
...and found a few things. The stock is still pretty strong, but don't expect to find every obscure thing like they used to have. However, even with 30% off, that only brings their prices down to about the amount you'd pay from an e-tailer. I bought 4 titles just out of respect for Tower.
What a thrilling place it was back in the 80s! All kinds of import LPs, at exhorbitant prices, but you'd find everything there. OK, Sonny, I'll stop reminiscing now.
