A friend of mine who has a 970 called the support line and was told that the firmware upgrade to fix the "gaps between the tracks" problem on SACD would be fixed by a firmware upgrade shortly after the first of the year.Given the 970's exceptional audio and video qualities, I am willing to put up with the gapping problem until then.
Follow Ups:
Off topic, apparently new OPPO player is coming out early next year, essentially 971 model with sacd capability
the 981, but it uses the same audio chip as the 970, and will ship w/ the same "gapless playback" issue.
i was told "before christmas". seems like they just don't know. more's the pitty, since i bought hte player chiefly for inexpensive sacd playback, and the sound is really quite good. this gaffe is just a deal-killer however, and one i don't understand. does any other player do this? moreover, oppo's attitude that gapless playback is a feature, rather than a requirement, is simply not acceptable.
I ordered an Oppo 970 on the same day that Oppo released a beta firmware update that corrects the 3second gap playback on SACD. I received my unit and after confirming this 'bug', I downloaded the firmware update and did the upgrade. That fixed the problem for SACD. SACD playback is now gapless. Being a beta release, they need to work on incrementing the track counter now for this fix. I can live with this for now though as the gapless SACD playback is what I wanted.Unit hasn't even started burning in yet however the sound is very impressive at the start. Comparing redbook, it is better sounding than my universal Toshiba 4960.
