Just a follow-up on my 10/16/06 post about the closing of Tower Records' South Wabash Street store Chicago. I went in yesterday afternoon (11/04/06) and found the place buzzing, even crowded in spots. The word of the closing has made evidently made the rounds, and the discount has gone to 30% off everything except the magazines (60% off). Agreed, that is still not a "steal" on the music, but I got several $19.00 SACDs for $13.00.Although the store didn't have the largest SACD collection before the sale, the SACDs now were few-and-far-between--pretty well picked over, it seemed. There appears to be a little restocking going on, but I'm not sure how much or for how long. For what remained, it wasn't all that difficult to find the SACDs, due to the the depletion of the stock (the Classical section on the third floor already had a couple of completely empty racks).
A unique benefit of the store was it's location just back of Symphony Hall (Symphony Center). The unique traditions of that store, going back to its Rose Records days, continue to the end: if you catch him at the right moment, one of the clerks will give you a little insider gossip about various Chicago Symphony conductors.
Follow Ups:
I have been going crazy too...buying every SACD that I can lay my hands on. I've bought 1/2 the entire Living Voice series and all of them are superb.I feel out of control. I am trying to buy every
SACD that I ever wanted because I have this fear that it may be my last opportunity to do so.The store is now depleted of discs and probably won't be open for too much longer. I am loving the sale but I am going to miss Tower.
Just head over to amazon.com. One just doesn't have to buy new and I haven't had any problems with SACDs I have bought used in the past. Also, amazon E-seller Caiman has good prices on SACDs and they sell only new. No affiliation with them except as a customer and I highly recommend them for quality service.
Tower is a real loss for me. Now that prices are 30% off, I've been going to local locations and poking around. Last weekend I ran across an SACD on Chandos, music by Michael Tippett. Well I didn't know much of his music but the price was low enough and there is also the fact that I may never see this SACD again in a store. So I got it and it's a really really good one. And today I got another SACD I'd never heard of called The Cries of London. Maybe it'll be good, don't know. Now I suppose I could've found both of these through an online vendor. But there's just something nice about spontaneous discovery and instant gratification. This has happened to me many many times at Tower, not just with SACDs, but long before, when I would look to see what new titles were out each week.
Was at Tower's Classical Annex in SF yesterday and today. It was sad to see the once-huge stock now fairly decimated, unlike at the main store across the street, where CDs and DVDs still seem to be in good supply. I guess classical music's not really as dead as many people had thought! The Classical Annex itself will close its doors for good on the 12th, and the remaining stock (what little there is of it) will be moved to the main store. Definitely the end of an era.Russell
They are apparently having the same sales everywhere. I picked up a few good jazz CD's and I think I'll go back tomarrow and do some more picking over. I did find a Telarc SACD Sampler #3 'Jazz but I also picked up 'The Frank & Joe Show 66 2/3' which I thought was funner as well as 'Jimmy Smith's Finest Hour' and the Tommaso-Rava Quartet's 'La Dolce Vita'. I'm going to have to pick up more of Jimmy Smith and the Tommaso-Rava Quartet, -which I really love.
Goodbye Tower Records, -but I must admit, they have never been my favorite record store so I won't really miss them but I like it when they have a 30% going out of business sale. I liked them also when they were converting all their sales from LP's to CD's, then was when they were have great sales on LP's and I loved them for that too.
