Hello,I've recently ordered an Onkyo SP1000 dvd player / sacd player. All is great, except for when I play SACDs. There is a background noise that I can only describe as "space alien." Just these high pitched warbly sounds in the background that are really apparent during quiet passages on SACDs.
When I tell the SP1000 to play the CD layer of the SACD, then all is well. No space warbling on the CD layer.
So - Has anyone run into this? Any ideas?
Follow Ups:
I had the same problem with an Integra DPS 10.5 which is more or less the same player as the Onkyo. I got it replaced and have not had a problem.
Did you replace it with another one of the same, or with a different brand player?
I replaced it with another one of the same model.
Does it make these noises on both MC and non-MC discs - or only on MC discs?I have the experience of MC discs creating this noise problem on some older extremely hot-rodded mchines that were never designed to play MC discs.
But If the noise is on both MC and non-MC discs - then I suggest you will have to try it through a different amplifier chain. Some amps/preamps are extremely sensitive to the ultrasonic noise output even by un-modifed players, and hence it's not a fault as such with your particular player.
...some amps become unstable when presented with ultrasonic tones, and these oscillations can set up secondary ripples down in the audible zone. Easiest way to find out if you have a second amp (or can borrow one) is to try a different amplifier in the system (or preamp-amp if that is what you are using).I've heard of a similar problem ocurring from others, but have never experienced it myself.

Happens on my modded Denon 3910, and mainly on older DSD recordings. SACD has noise wayyy up in the ultrahigh frequencies that, if not proerly filtered, makes its way down into the audible range. Dan Wright is aware of it and will fix mine, as per his usual great service. Many machines, like the 3910, have 50k and 100k SACD filters, but in my case, neither do the trick, and one of them (don't remember which one) makes it worse. The noise sounds like interstation noise on an FM band, as if the station is quite tuned dead on. Switching to PCM processing ("source direct off") is a work around.
