I already own the Zander, Fischer and MTT SFSO purchased in that order on SACD. I also have the Boulez on CD.Strictly for sound, I could have stopped at the Zander in multichannel and remained quite pleased. Definitely one of the best recordings I've ever heard in surround.
One favorable comment on sacd.net so far regarding this Ondine recording. Are going to spring for this one? TIA!!
Follow Ups:
I'm going to be buying this next week when I go to Philly to hear the Orchestra. I was at one of the performances (the Friday afternoon one) of the Mahler. I was sick as a dog but was still very taken with the performance and I am not necessarily an Eschenbach fan. There were, for me, a number of "goosebump" momments, so I very much want to hear the recording.
For the record, I have heard the 6th live many times: Steinberg-Boston, Abbado-Cleveland, Dohnani-Cleveland, Solti-Chicago, Levine-MET, so I have a very high standard for this incredible piece. For me, the Eschenbach one SHOULD be excellent, given the high level of recording quality from the first two releases from Ondine.
So many performances, so little time.
I thought the MCH sound-quality excellent with lots of revealed detail that I thoroughly enjoyed. The performance is M-O-R: OK but not hugely inspiring. Too many other 6ths out there with smashing emotional impact.
I realize it ain't supposed to be so (at least so I'm told) but this wasn't the first hybrid disc that folks have raved about, or at least spoke kindly, that I've found deficient on RB playback. Is it me, or is RB playback variable on hybrid SACD discs, especially MCH encoded ones?
I never bother with the RB layer any more.
Hi Robert--As you know, I'm a Mahler junkie and so had to have this recording, particularly as it has received excellent writeups on the Gustav Mahler Board and elsewhere. I have to say that I was only able to listen to the first movement (I've got so little time for serious listening these days) and came away very UNimpressed. Performance was just so-so for me, and the sonics were nothing special (at least in 2-channel). I didn't feel compelled to listen to the rest of it. The Fischer recording has been my new standard for performance and sound quality ever since it was released last year, and the new one--at least on the basis of the first movement--doesn't come close.
I don't do SACD but in RB the sonics are closed in (smallish sound stage) and seem compressed (lacking dynamics). The performance is quite 'beautiful' if you like mellow Mahler, especially the 4th movement. For me the good news is that he didn't reorder the 2d and 3d movements which is so in vogue just now. Just to be sure my system wasn't the problem I played the 4th movement from Bernsteins, Van Karajan's, Zanders, MTT's, and my favorite Sanderling. Wasn't my system! But, FWIW, I did like it more than Fischers. :-)
