Lets please keep this to 2004 releases only please. Any comments on why you picked what you picked would be nice for all to read.Happy New Year!
Follow Ups:
The strings, omigod, the string sound on this disc!
I think Ein Heldenleben, sounds clearly better than Also sprach..which actually by absolute standards,no concessions made for age and such, is good yes, but shows its age.
Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith - Sky Garden (Rune 191/192)"Yo Miles!" is a really long double SACD with some of the most stunning electric jazz along the lines of Bitches Brew and good Weather Report. Don't be put off and think it's just a poor imitation of the real thing. These guys can really play, and the sound is fantastic. The price is very reasonable for a double SACD.

Geoff
would be very interested in picking this up as i am fond of miles' electric phase. but seeing this is an indie label, dont think it is easily or commonly available.btw if u r fond of this genre, i find similarities between this free-form jazz as seen in live evil, big fun, in a silent way with nin's music. thats one of the reasons i like miles' electric/fusion phase.
i have bought about 20 sacds this xmas weekend alone, some old, some new.but the best sacd of 2004 that comes to mind, must be nine inch nails' the downward spiral deluxe edition sacd.
a true sonic revelation n must get for all nin fans. i have given up on this album long time ago due to well, digit-itis n have been listening to the fragile. but after getting this, i have rediscovered this album. case in point, reznor's vocals in hurt, full of torment n inflection, even surpasses cash's rendition, which i didnt find in the normal cd.
there is also a bonus, in the 2nd disc, which is also on sacd (originally announced on cd).
the only downside? they could have put better tracks on the 2nd disc, like the entire further down the spiral ep, instead of the demo cuts.
It may be as you say,a true sonic revelation n must get for all nin fans ,
but for someone who is not a fan, it's unapproachable, dense, unforgiving, and totally without light or shade. I've never heard Nine Inch Nails before, and bought this disc on the basis of Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt". I was hoping for more songs in that style, but it was not to be. Just noise.
Regards,
Geoff
i can understand why many dont get nin. its dark, bleak n appear unredeeming. but the music is oh so beautiful n reznor's music have shown maturity with fragile, instead of his bleak and destructive music on downward spiral.how can u not be moved by piggy, heresy, hurt, reptile n the rest? doesnt burn makes u wanna dance n destroy all your furniture? or hurt makes u wanna mutilate yourself?
but sonically, hurt on the sacd beats cash's rendition hands down, no?
doesnt burn makes u wanna dance n destroy all your furniture?I have 3 cats that are doing a fine job of that--they don't need anyhelp from me.
your cats dance? how they do that? if their fur sticks out, its more getting agitated n aggro than being enchanted by the sound.
This has barely been mentioned here and it is great both in music and sound. I have played this one often. As far as 2004, the Living Stereo and Mercury LS releases have been discussed in detail, many of these would make my list. Same for the Can reissues.
felt this time is much better.have been trying to sell aztalan for some time n found no success. think our jeromelang have been trying to sell his without much success too.
and I like them both, but like you, This Time is the one I keep returning to. Very different styles of production and the Tchad Blake produced This Time is explicitly experimental, similar to the previous Kiko, while Good Morning...is much more straightforward. I happen to like all the little studio tricks and think they add up to a compelling and involving experience. But I like the other quite a bit too in its own way.
DG's two recent releases: Anna Netrebko's Sempre Libere; and Hillary Hahn's Elgar's Violin Concerto certainly should be included as raising the bar for any new classical releases.

I just listened to the Berlioz yesterday. It was a Christmas present and I waited until the house was empty so I could play it loud and clear. Yes, this music is what sacd surround was made for -
quite natural overall, and the brass choirs from the rear as the composer intended. Really excellent.
I heard this piece live in Carnegie Hall several years ago, and live beats anything on disc - but we know that. It was a thrill to see as well as hear the enormous forces filling the stage in full cry, with well over 200 in the chorus and 14 tympany. I have the old Shaw Requiem, and it does sound very good with Dolby Logic II simulated surround - but the Spano beats it.
Mercury Living Presence series.
I am enjoying Mr. Ray Charles, "Genius loves company"Not only do I think that this will be record of the year but also get Song of the year with "Here we go again" with Nora Jones. What an honor and opportunity for her.
Thanks for asking. 2004 what not the best year for 2004 but I am interested in what some of us SACD-philes think should get a mention. Not sytle limited but SACD tone, sound, and mastering excellents.
I think my favourite SACDs last year were not published in 2004, but that's because I have lot of catching up to do.On the top of my mind, I think those were published in 2004:
- Gotan Project, la Revancha del Tango
- Chiara Bianchini & Ensemble 415 (Harmonia Mundi)
- Jacobs, Mariage de Figaro, Harmonia MundiThere are others, which I forget, probably
best,
Eric"Julian Dicks is everywhere.
It's like they've got eleven Dicks on the
field."
"On this record we worked very hard to personalize the Gershwin material while staying true to the spirit of jazz." Herbie HancockThis recording since recorded in 1998 makes it unlikely that it is a "pure" DSD recording, but it is very organic in sound.
Herbie is at his best and is joined on various tracks by such guests as Joni Mitchel, Stevie Wonder, James Carter, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrott, Wayne Shorter and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
.
.. the price of admission.
Lorraine Hunt Lieberson: Handel Arias: Seems to be pure DSD. Who cares if it isn't. Hers is a voice of rare corporeality: you really get the sense that there are womanly curves providing a foundation to the tones. The Theodora arias were a revelation.Apparently, this is setting records for a new (not reissue) native DSD classical SACD: about 15,000 pieces shipped. Awesome.
A shoo-in for a Grammy, I'd bet.
Cheers from Rhode Island,

Guitar, Organ and Drums - what a combination! It works for me, and the 1959 recording is great too.
The most in-the-room SACD I've bought. Wish they'd pull a Rolling Stones on the entire Who catalog.
I just got RL Burnsides "First Recordings", a MFSL SACD, as a Christmas gift, and it is fabulous. Plenty of other outstanding SACD's in 04, and this is clearly one of them. Great music and the recording is "you are there" quality. I have a sneaky suspicion Chris Whitley is familiar with RL's early recordings also.
early mostly acoustic and raw, but for my money, the prime RL Burnside is on his lowdown dirty electric albums like The Wizard (my favorite) and Ass Pocket Full of Whiskey. No SACDs, but Fat Possum always seems to release easily available vinyl and these are really good.
what it is is one of the better SACD's released in 04, which is what the poster asked. What is the best, or ones favorite RL, is another topic altogether. Ass Pocket and Wizard are 2 of my favorites also, and Fat Possum is a great label.
Thank you 'mes' I am only interested in your favorite or series of SACD released in the year 2004. I don't know how or why some poeple dont get that. Create another string if they want to communicate or ask what they think some of their favorite or better SACD's peaple here may want to check out.
Went to the Fat Possum site, no Ass Pocket... where else do you order his LP's?
I've seen em on Amazon previously.
