HiApologies for the JWC - Judith Wright Centre in New Farm / Valley. I have never been to a gig there before, nor seen The Necks live, so a new experience for me!
Are you thinking about going?
Follow Ups:
Not really. It's just I'd never even heard of the venue.Excuse my ignorance also, as I don't know the band either. What sort of stuff do they play??
Smoke me a kipper...I'll be Back for Breakfast.
Cheers
Hmmm, what sort of stuff do they play? In my limited exposure, I would say they are not easily categorised but I would describe them as progressive jazz, creative, ambient (minus the electronica), and subtly rhythmic / percussive. Emotionally, I find them dark, brooding, and earnest with moments of light and openness.FWIW, these guys are supposed to be considered minor jazz legends, but I really would not know - I love music but care little for the trivia that accompanies it... I'm no music buff.
Er, does that help any.
Well it looks like I will miss the Necks as I will be in Noosa as my girlfriend is having to work that weekend as her company are a sponsor of the Noosa Jazz festival which is that weekend .... and its not a great fest as it concentrates on Trad and Sswing...
But so be it.
The Necks are often classed as jazz although that may be a bit tenuous.
A piano )occcasional other keyboard)/bass/drums trio playing more or less a completely improvised set often starting with a piano phrase and rolling through an everchanging soundscape for as much as an hour before they stop.
I have heard descriptions such as Jarret-ish or ECM-ish but I think names like Eno or Roedelius might be as apropriate.
At their best they combine a Debussy impressionistic colour pallette with a jazz trio light footed interplay.
Do go and see them.
Maybe we fans of the unusual should get together at one of those Fabrique nights at the Powerhouse...?
It's too bad you can not make it to see The Necks - it may be that you will find some music you will like at @ Noosa.I am definately up for a night of Fabrique at the Powerhouse. Strangely, my girlfriend is on the mailing list for the Powerhouse - I read the upcoming events - but am unfamiliar w/ Fabrique. Must read more carefully.
BTW, I have seen some enjoyable jazz-ish artists in Brissy over the last couple of years, but seem unable to find them consistently. Is it that I am simply not aware of what is in circulatation, or is there just not all that much happening.
And finally, why no apparent festivals with the scope of the Heat festival a couple of years back? Two and a half days and nights of great music and huge crowds - and that was before Brissy's recent growth spurt and shed the "big country town" label.
Anyhow, enough stream of consciousness questions...
