Hi, everybody,After getting two ZERO 7 recordings last week (Simple Things & When It Falls), and being really impressed with both, I would like to get some more stuff like this, with that same kind "lazy sound" of this awesome band.
So, what else should I get now?
Follow Ups:
i'm not familiar with "zero 7" but if you want more laid back tracks:"dubnology" is a great 4 CD sollection i bought in a store for just $16. it isn't like typical "electronic" collections. there's way more variety and even some funky beats. some of the tracks are pretty surrealistic too. sample this collection. i bet it's just what you're looking for.
sollex "solex vs. the hitmeister" is a very odd album that comes off like a cross between potishead & cyndi lauper. it's like "goth disco"
cabaret voltaire's "plasticity" is a much better than average "trance" type disc. it has some really deep bass too.
you might really like mickey hart's "planet drum & at the edge" CDs the first is a mostly instrumental percussion disc with alot of mellow tracks and the other is better than average new age with a beat.
the art of noise is REALLY trippy, and often more raved up, but "invisible silence" has more laid back tracks including a wierd take on musak. i'd recommend their best of disc "daft" which is even wierder and better, but not much of it is mellow.
and finally... "smokers delight" by nighmares on wax is an interesting chillout mix of mellow with a twist of hip hop.
the original "mellow and trippy" disc would have to be "dark side of the moon" but maybe you might like "dub side of the moon"
My favorite trippy female vocalists:Listen to Hooverphonic. Then find the symphonic unplugged version. Amazing!
Skye Edwards of Morcheeba is to die for.
So is Beth Gibbons of Portishead.
Esthero will give you chills.
For a little more edge try Goldfrapp or Lamb.
you might like these bands
The Dining Rooms, - "El Numero Deux" and "Tres." Les Hommes. Fragile State is a Zero 7 offshoot band with some members of Zero 7 in it. The new Air is really good, plus I still really like the first Air CD.
Prem Joshua, "Dakini Lounge," remixes are good too.....Flunk, "for Sleepyheads only." And, you can't go wrong with Thievery Corporation, - "Mirror Conspiracy," "Sounds from the Thievery Hifi" and "DJ Kicks" are my 3 favs, - the new one is pretty good too.
I don't like "When it Falls" much and sold it. Love Zero 7, but that CD is too "American" for me, - too much rootsy vocals and not enough interesting music, - just my opinion....
Kruder and Dorfmeister (the downtempo kings). Ditto Thievery Corporation rec. You may also like Richard Dorfmeister's dj mix album available on the Different drummer label - reggae influenced downtempo Dj mix. Anything by Timewriter if you like deep house. There is too much downtemp stuff to list.
"There is too much downtemp stuff to list."Yes indeed.
That's why I tried to keep the suggestions around the female vocal, downtempo field.A couple to add that are not too far away from Zero 7, - Supreme Beings of Leisure and the first Portishead record,- "Dummy."
Cheers,
PS> (I have that Dorfmeister DJ reggae mix CD, - very good).
:-)
Load up Winamp (free) and try their internet radio feature.
Stations are listed by genre, and there are a ton of downtempo ambient stations to choose from. You'll find a number you like, I'd guess, and can always buy the disc or tracks. I like Groove Salad, Lounge Radio, Secret Sound, Jazz Musique, and Radio Ambient.
Have fun...
