I have the last two in your post-definitly great stuff. My last purchases were vinyl and older stuff. Oh wait, Zap Mamas latest wasn't as great as "Ah Ma Zone" - which we all should have-no kidding you need this-tracks 5-8 are great performences and audiophile quality production and recording quality. There are no slouches on this one. The lastest is "Ancestory in Progress" which is nice but neither the material(opinion) or the recording(fact) is as good.
Follow Ups:
Hiya....I picked up a Material CD, sorry, forgot the name. I'll check it (the name of it) tonight and another Bill Laswell. Can you give me the full name of the Zap Mama CD that you mentioned? I have been meaning to pick one up.
I was disappointed with my last trip to Amoeba, I picked up Groove Armada's "back to mine." That is incredible. But, Perfecto Chills Vol. 1 wouldn't play on my new CDP, Moby's Hotel didn't do it for me, and I positively hated !K7: somehow I thought that this was going to be like Kruder and Dorfmeister????
Yuk....
Going back to Amoeba tonight to try and recover from last weeks bad trip....
Mercan Dede and Orient Expressions, both from Turkey are pretty good, I think that I prefer the Mercan Dede. Also, the new 6 degrees release of Nijaz is pretty good. All 3 don't touch Prem Joshua's remixed, - "Dakini Lounge."
Maybe I'm getting burned out on Arabic flavored downtempo pop....
if you have to ask wha-iz-it, you ain't never gonna know
Zap Mama has about 7 releases. The first several are mostly accapella but you may not think so at first listen-that's how good they are! A few tracks have a little added instrumentation or at least a drum but some have vocals through a harmonizer that sounds a little synth-like. So those first few are nice but "Ah Ma Zone" 1998 on their label Luaka-Bop (luaka bop is the name given to the sounds beetles make to communicate with each other) is their best by a lot in every catagory IMO.
Laswell is great and has a ton of recordings under his name, Tabla Beat, Material-the first Material I have is "Memory Serves" from the 80's,Sacred System and Divination and there are probably more. My favs by him are "Lo Def Pressure" on the Quarterflash label and the Wobble/Laswell "Radioaxiom: A Dub Transmission" on Axiom. Lo Def is cool;two 25 minute tracks a la Tabla Beat w/Zakir Hussein, heavy beats, limited Indian female vocals as segues, and both naked and heavily processed tablas. I know you recently got "Hallucination Engine" pretty good one huh? Gotta love the Burroughs vocals and the nice Weather Report/Cobham fusion remakes not to mention Trilok on percussion.
Here is a link to Zap Mama- make sure you get "Ah Ma Zone" -listen to tracks 5-8 first when you get it, then the rest, it's a treat in every way. Also look for the repeat of their Sessions @ West 54th show on PBS. Great live show excerpt-4 tracks. I have a VCD of it somewhere I can copy for you if you end up liking them a lot.ET
Appreciate the tips, I ordered that Zap Mama CD, the Bill Laswell, "Lo def" is tough to find.....thanks again...
I can "find" a lo-def for you. And I forgot to thank you for your tips in your original post as well. Let me know what you think of the Zap Mama-remeber tracks 5-8 first! Email me direct-request member email-thanks!
