I bought the "redbook" release of this instead of the DudDisc. I would have liked to have it in 24/96 lpcm, but wasn't willing to take the chance of player incompatibility. The regular cd sounds very good, though.I have been a fan of Mr. Reznor's work since Pretty Hate Machine, and own all subsequent releases. This is one of the best, IMO.
I think that With Teeth returns to a slightly more "pop" sensibility... more in the vein of Pretty Hate Machine. There are more metallic sounding tracks, but also some nice melodic moments. I also like the layout and length of this album. It seems a little short, but sweet. I can sit and listen to the whole thing, and when it's over I still want more. I don't remember the last time I sat through both discs of The Fragile... or all of The Downward Spiral. Although, I must admit that the SACD release of TDS has seen a lot of spin time recently (especially disc 2). If you have an SACD rig I highly recommend it.
Summing up, I think With Teeth is a superbly conceived, coherent, engaging album. It's certainly a little more accessible than some of Trent's previous work. Highly recommended.
Follow Ups:
It is the only NIN album I don't own.I have the Downward Spiral DualDisc. I didn't buy the SACD, because I have most of what is on the second disc on various CD singles.
But, relatively speaking, I find that With Teeth is the better album for the reasons oulined in my previous post. The Fragile is definitely worth owning. Two of my favorite NIN songs appear on it: "We're in This Together Now" and "The Great Below".If I had to characterize it in general terms, I would say that The Fragile is more conceptual and ambient, but still rocks.
I also have a revulsion to the song "The Day the World Went Away" which is on this album. Not sure why... maybe too whiney. I usually start disc 1 at track 3 "The Frail" just to get past it! The rest of the album works well for me.
Pick it up. I you dig Reznor's other material, you'll dig The Fragile.
If you don't have the DVD "All That Could Have Been", you must run (don't walk) to your favorite store and pick it up. It's an ass-kicker. One of the best concert films I've ever seen.
his other concert release (VHS only at this point). I cant remember the name offhand, but it covers the Downward Spiral tour. From what I hear, it may see the light of day on DVD this year.
