I love Stella and other stuff from that era and didn't like a lot after that. I just got the 2005 rerelease of "The Eye"(2003) w/ the 6 track bonus disk for 12.99 at a mall store. Very nice! They were up to their usual stuff and there is a huge image and better than average fidelity. Hipsters Delay is a very cool track. I hear Miles/Laswell influence among other things. I swear I had a flashback or two and a big smile listening to this CD. These guys are cool.
Follow Ups:
i actually own "you gotta say yes to another excess" figuring it would be as funky as the overplayed "oh yeah" track, but didn't like the album one bit. it does have great sonics, but there's really no funk to it. it's way too jazzy for my tastes. i hate jazz and it's incessant nonsense babbling. LOL i'd rather listen to the kingsmen barely playing "louie louie" any day.to anyone who DOES like the song "oh yeah", look the awesome electronic compilation called "dubnology" up. it's one of the few electronic compilations where every band doesn't sound like every other *thumpthumpthumpthump* band. to my ears, house, techno, jungle and breakbeat pretty much all sound the same. this collection has TONS of variety and came as a pleasant surprise at $16 for FOUR count em' four CDs.
there's a particular track called "um baby" in the collection that sounds like it could easily be a b-side to "oh yeah". there are easily a dozen tracks in the series that work for me.
there's everything from rootsy dub, to a haunting experimental a capella, to light industrial (read ACCESSIBLE) as well as tracks that have references to house etc. but way more flavorful and funky.
go to a site that lets you sample tracks and see for yourself.
yello seems a bit pretentious and self indulgent like the art of noise slowly devolved into to me. LOL maybe that's the point of "you gotta say yes to another excess" and i just didn't get it as i wanted to tap my toe.
The "Oh Yeah" album was the pits (I sold it). Try "You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess" for a REAL eye opening album. That one rocks, in a twisted sort of way. Incidentally, the CD version has some changes from the original 1980's album version. I have both...
And if you like YGSY2AE, then also try vintage 80's Shreikback.
Their old recording with "oh yeah" on it is amazing. Definitely, a pre-cursor to much of that loungey, downtempo stuff that I so love....
Especially the song Blender...man the bass in that track!
got The Eye.
Didnt think it topped their old releases. Maybe I should listen to it more...
Still 'the Flag' does it for me everytime. OR blasting 'Resistor' out of the Pocket Universe put a silly grin on my face.:)
So are Boris and Deiter........but they still got it. They always put a grin on my face. I always loved "Bananas to the Beat" also. I always wished "Tub Dub" was longer than its minute and a half. Cheers!
