That is the question.
Follow Ups:
...doesn't mean it is crap. It's just not your type of music. As to the original question:
I see rap as a purely American founded music style. Any rappers from the UK are copying the style. Maybe some are good, maybe they all suck. I don't know.
I own a couple - Ice Cube, Cyprus Hill, the first Snoop & MC Solaar. But honestly, how many of the hundreds of acts are any good ?
....that I receive from a lot of people, and although I like the genre, I'd say that no more than 10 percent are any good at all, including many of the top sellers. It seems now, that many "artists" are making what I call "atonal, arhythmic hip hop." They don't have the skills to write a decent rhyme after their first 3 ideas, and their beats, to put it mildly, stink. Hell, I bet they can barely clap their hands in time to a beat. "Hiring" a good "producer" only helps the samples, because that is what it generally means to be a producer today; sitting around their home studio and listening to obscure and not so obscure vinyl. Weak.I am sick of the whole pimping, v-12s, SUVs, Platinum chains, handguns, petty thuggery, etc. scene. Overall, although there are several really good artists, bands and groups of bands, in general, the talent is very, very thin.
Wasn't it Theodore Sturgeon who said 90% of everything is crap? In pop music, I'd say there is generally a lot of bad along with the good. Rap is no exception. I make no attempt to keep current with latest and greatest in rap, and unfortunately what gets played on commercial radio is not all that great. There used to be an "underground" rap show on my local college radio station, now gone, maybe because of the language, but I'd say 80% of what got played was good. My favorite rap albums are not single artist, but compilations like Sound Bombing and Lyricist Lounge.
Most seem to be copies of others. Not all of them have real talent.
