Sorry if this has been covered before. Many people see proper grammar as burdemsome, but I see it as a mark of respect, and bad grammar as a way to dis someone. Can we all agree to write the word Jazz with an upper case J?
Follow Ups:
. . . "jazz" wasn't a proper noun. I do prefer proper grammar, so no, it should not be capitalized. Thanks for not capitalizing it from now on.
According to my Chicago Manual of Style, nouns and adjectives designiating cultural styles, movements, and schools--artistic, architectural, musical, and so forth--and their adherents are capitalized if derived from proper nouns. Others are usually lowercased, though a few, (e.g. Cynic, Scholastic) are capitalized to distinguish them from the generic words used in everyday speech. So:
art deco
baroque
Hellenism
RomanesqueMy interpretation of this is that jazz (the movement, not the team), generally speaking, should be lowercased.
BUT, some names of periods are capitalized, either by tradition or to avoid ambiguity:So:
the Renaissance
the Roaring Twenties
the Jazz AgeAll of a sudden, I don't envy the job of an editor! (But what a challenge!!)
Did I miss a day in school? Is it gramatically correct to capitalize a genre?...or just the word "jazz"? If the former is true, I guess we should not only capitalize jazz but every other genre also.
I checked out some of the dedicated jazz websites, and none of them capitalize the word....
Not sure what you mean by "burdemsome" either. If I want to dis somebody jizz seems most appropriate. You're not disrespecting us are you?
Give me rhythm or give me death!
