The Silver Jews - Tanglewood Numbers. Had heard of it before, but seeing it on the R2D4 list got me off my butt and into the record store. It's a great rock record... one of the best of 2005, IMHO. Some great songwriting (and hilarious lyrics)!
Follow Ups:
Yeah, that is a good one. One of my favorites last year too. Sound quality isn't very good on this new one since it's pretty highly compressed like just about all modern stuff, but if you like that type of quirky alt-country music, definitely get a copy of their American Water from the late 90s. Beautiful analog recording done at the little Rare Book Room in Brooklyn and mastered at Abbey Road, back in the days when Abbey Road was a decent mastering house. Dave Berman and Steve Malkmus primarily, but with a few others on hand making it a little like a cross between Wilco and Pavement, but better lyrically than either. One of my favorites, and one I have played tons of times and still enjoy. A real classic in my mind. 1998 on the Drag City label, which means vinyl is available and it's a good sounding one too.
If you're looking to get a Silver Jews album, American Water is a better place to start than Tanglewood Numbers, at least to these ears.
American Water is a fantastic record. If you can get it on vinyl, by all means do so. Great sound, great music. Definitely in my top 10 of the last 10 years or so. Haven't heard the new one yet, but it's at the top of my "to buy" list
