Certainly was there. Distinctly underwhelmed. I think it was mainly the PA. I left about 11:15. Might have to give them another chance but hopefully at another venue.
Cheerswelly
I went to a restaurant that serves "breakfast at any time". So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.
Follow Ups:
I doubt I would go back to that venue for anything I had to pay for.
I don't think bands do themselves any favours playing places like that.
Depends on the band of course but with the types of music DR play, it just pushed them to one end of what they can do, imo.
Hi GuysWas DR at the QUT Campus Club or no? Is it still upstairs from the student cafe? If yes, I saw the Falling Joys there a decade ago (semi-interesting story!) and was underwhelmed by the venue - but the band was great, from what I can almost remember! I would have hoped it had moved / improved given the $$$ spent on that campus.
Lock It off the Wish List album is as great a song of love and lust as you could ever hear.
Hi DaveYep, a great band. Good albums, great live. Lock It is an "indie" classic - a beautifu song.
I was also into into the Clouds - friends of Falling Joys - at the same time. Another great band... at least until Stuart Eadie left.
Hey Dave - my memory is a little muddled at present - but are you the same Dave who has been living in Aus ~ 4yrs? If yes - good pick-up on the Falling Joys!
I moved here in late 1999, like a bit plyaer in an old Prince song!
I used to work in the music business for some time so when I first came to Oz at the end of Feb 99, I really wanted to check out what was happening and what had been happening here.
The Falling Joys were something I tripped over on JJJ along with Ben Lee and Gerling just the first week I was here. Oh and Hunters And Collectors.
The Saints I had met/worked with in London, The Go Betweens I had liked, The Triffids I had adored as had the entire London music business (when Dave and The Red Ponies played in what 95(?) the gigs were so popular I couldn't even get near a ticket let alone a guest list), Nick Cave used to come down to Brighton where I lived a lot as he had a girlfriend there and so I was quite up (or so I thought) on Aussie music... until I got here!
What an interesting life you have! So, how are you finding the Australian music scene? I am feeling a little removed from it at present - with study commitments and no tuner! - though I am looking to dive back in post end-of-semesters (mine do not finish until Dec 2).What are you up to over the festive season - if you are up to seeing a band or so, let me know!
i love your music
I am just listening to Classic FM, and JUlian Day's Up Late programme which is essential if you haven't heard it mixing mmmm "art Music with early music and he just played a fantastic pie ce by ... Silage Kershaw (that was what it sounded like ) and maybe Costalli and announced that next Tuesday would be a feature on that kind of other worldly art music... 10.30 til midnight.30 Monday to Friday on well here in Brissie its mmmm 106.1.
I have no plans for the holiday period having just become single again so interesting music is on the map.
My next planned event is the next Fabrique at the Powerhouse which isn't till 16th December I think, but I seem to remember something cool sounding this weekend on the Jazzbrisbane website althoigh my aging memory is proving disfunctional at the moment and I can't be bothered checking!
Lazy bastard that I am...
Seems like I will need to hand over the $$$ for a tuner...Fabrique on the 16th sounds like a real possibility - I am up for it.
Jeff Usher and the Love Supreme Super Band is at the JWC - could that be what you were thinking of?
Okay, back to study - only 2 1/2 weeks to go! I feel sooo spent...
I can still remember how stressed its easy to get...
.
.
What you're describing sounds right. I'd never been to QUT before friday, but there was an area with tables outside in a kinda courtyard, then in through a door and upstairs to the guild bar.I thought the beer would've been a bit cheaper too. Not really any different to pub prices.
Bit of shame actually. I had been looking forward to the evening.
As I've said. I think i'd like to give DR another chance, but preferably in a better venue.

Yep - that sounds like it. What - the beer is at pub prices? Hmmmm, the polish has very much worn off student life!
Oh, btw, I just ordered my ticket for the Big Day Out. God, I'll probably feel reeeeeeaaaally old there :-(

... and its downhill all the way now...
Ah well, never mind. At least the ticket was only 18bucks. Do either of you know any good bands coming up soon?

Nope - out of the loop for far too long. Hell, I don't even know who is playing at the Big Day Out!I might pick up some street press and check out what is on in the next month or so.
Cheers, Raymond
The White Stripes
Iggy & The Stooges
Franz FerdinandKings of Leon
The Mars Volta
Sleater-Kinney...Plus many others

... since we seem to have taken over this forum!! Have you ever been to see anything down at the Waterloo?
.
having been to the Waterloo... not your conspiracy, which of course I could be up for!
I didn't answer because I wasn't sure what you meant.
Well, as far as conspiracies go, we just missed Steve Earle.
... thus the reason for clarifying my post. I reread the post a couple of hours after posting it and thought it could be interpreted a couple of ways - mostly not in the positive (unintentionaly!), esp. given my response to a different post above! Apologies for that Dave. Hmmm, seems to have been one of those (rare) days I was wearing my cranky pants and in a rush - not a good combination. Two weeks of exams to go then some freedom. I will pace myself better next semester so I do not have to cram during the second half. Isn't that what I told myself last semester?!
