In addition to Spandau Ballet suggested below, how about:Pet Shop Boys - Albums: Please and Actually - Songs: West End Girls, It's a Sin, Rent, Suburbia etc.
Arcadia (Duran spin off) - Album: So Red the Rose (it was a fave) - Songs: Election Day and The Promise etc.
ABC - various albums (lots of variet on each), but there must be a "best of..." - Songs: sooo many, but Be Near Me, Look of Love, and When Smokey Sings are three that spring to mind.
Modern English? - Song: Melt With You?
Alphaville - Album: Breathtaking Blue - Songs: various (this choice is a little obscure maybe)
Now, outside the "New Romatic" monika - and a little closer to Sordidman's suggestions:
Rebirth of Cool compilations, especially 5 and maybe 6.
La Mezzanine de l'Alcazar - a two disk set, one of which is labelled "Seduction Time"... very nice, but maybe not what you are looking for.
Cheers, Raymond
PS. Heaven 17 was a spin off from Human League (great band) that may also be worth checking out.
Follow Ups:
Okay, I feel dirty associating this band with the New Romatic mvt - they most certainly are not - but may be what you are looking for.The Church - Album: Best Of - Songs: The Unguarded Moment, Under the Milky Way, Metropolis, Almost With You.
Apologies to Steve K and co.
i actually own an A.B.C. album with "the look of love" on it already. they are in the ballpark for sure, but don't have quite the pull of the best anthems out there.i looked into "human league" already earlier today, but didn't hear anything trule sexy on their "best of" disc with the possible exception of "human". human league is more of a formerly way overplayed dance pop band.
spandau ballet? i remember the name, but can't place any of their hits, but i'm pretty sure they're close to what i'm looking for.
pet shop boys? wow! i can't believe i forgot them. they definately have the new romantic sound for sure.
modern english? "i will melt with you" is a HUGE balled and definately essential. as soon as i read the title, i remembered the song and was brought back in time 20 years. wow. has it really been that long already?
i might even have a decent track on my "best of new order" compilation if i ever pull it of my shelf and listen again. from what i remember, they were more clubbish though.
way back in the day, i wasn't really into new romantic music much. i was more into "the art of noise" and hip-hop back when it really was hip-hop and not the OPPOSITE of "get out of the gangs and do something positive" which much of what is called hip-hop is today.
when i mentioned "scritti politti", i was only thinking of the "perfect way" track that i have on some compilation, but found "the word girl" earlier today which is a pure keeper.
i also remembered suzanne vega's minor hit "tom's diner" today. it's all coming back in bits and pieces... oh no... i just thought of "wierd science". HELP!
hey... thanks alot for that reply. you've reminded me of alot of potential material to track down and buy for those perfect "pure hits" compilations and 5 discs worth of relaxation.
... I type while listening to Waiting for the Siren's Call. Still don't know how I feel about this album tho.Glad I could hlep a little.
Cheers, Raymond.
PS. Human League may have been over played - especially their dancier pop stuff - but there may be more to them than record companies and radio stations promoted.
