after just purchasing a panasonic reciever that really makes vocals sound great... i've started listening to old mellow makeout classics by the likes of sade and roxy music.i've been trying to dig some nice compilation discs up at SEVERAL music store search engines including amazon and cduniverse to no avail to find some other makeout anthems i might be overlooking. i'm particularly looking for tracks that are really well recorded "demo grade" material.
what sexy tunes or ESPECIALLY compilations can you name. i'm looking more for easy listening tunes than say whitney houston belting out "i will always love you"
so far, these are the best of the best tracks and or artists i can think of:
tracks:
lady in red: chris deburgh
true colors: cyndy lauper
don't know why: norah jones
you take my breath away: berlin
naive melody: talking heads
one more night: phil collins
the tide is high: blondie
lay lady lay: bob dylan
love theme from blade runner: vangelis (inst.)
unchained melody: righteous brothers
music square: shonen knife
tavasz tavasz: marta sebestyen (sexy hungarian electropop lullaby)
my immortal: evanescence
every time: britney spears
intuition: jewel
falling in love (uh-oh): miami sound machine
no one is to blame: howard jones
head on the door: the cure
so in love: OMD
a primiera vista: badi assad
moments in love (inst.): the art of noise
obatala (inst.): malcom mclaren
hold you tight: tara kemp
dance floor: zappmellow pop artists:
sade (her greatest hits CD has anything worth owning... sexy voice)
roxy music
culture club
scritti politti
marta sebestyen: apocryphia
orchestral manoeuvres in the dark (OMD)
human league
ray lynch (new age instrumentals)
mickey hart: at he edgeanything you can add to this list will be greatly appreciated. sexy female vocals are especially appreciated, but anything that creates a mellow romantic mood WITHOUT being boring muzak is sought after. basically, i'm mostly looking for songs similar to the ones i've listed that are just as powerful.
any good "romantic moods" type compilations that have more than just one really good song are appreciated too. i couldn't find ANY disc that had "lady in red" plus at least one other great song but there has to be a decent compilation with it somewhere. it's probably out of print by now LOL.
Follow Ups:
Bryan Ferry,"Mamouna"(remastered)like an extension of "Avalon"
Bryan Ferry,"Frantic"I like the entire disc but I'll hi-lite these:It's All Over Now(Dylan),Godess of Love,Don't Think Twice,A Fool For Love,I Thought(Eno)Try; Felt Mountain(Goldfrapp)
Love in the Time of Science(E.Torini)Didn't see any Zero 7 on your list...they've a great pop/electronic mesh
never even heard of "zero 7". can't put anything i've never heard of on the list. never heard of "goldfrapp" or "e. totini" either. if they're electronic bands, i've never heard of them as i gave up on auditioning new electronic bands as most of them sound exactly alike to me. it's very hard to discover something good by accident, that's for sure. well... rykodisc almost always has a few great tracks in it's collections.i'll still have to give them a looksee. couldn't hurt.
just recently, i remembered "across the universe" by fiona apple from the end of pleasantville. she sounds sexy there.
from what i remember, doesn't bryan ferry sound alot like later roxy music in his solo work too? i should feel lucky that my "street life" compilation has the most great tracks where 2-3 others are missing a track or two.
virginia plain
love is the drug
slave to love
avalon
in the midnight hour
same old scene
and
more than thisnone of the other compilations had all these tracks. they're a pretty hefty chunk of great tunes for sure.
to see if you tryed and liked any of the suggestions...in particular the newer B. Ferry and Zero 7?
If I can hone in on your tastes, then I can throw up more ideas.
no, not yet. listening to the other stuff i didn't like burned me out for a bit. i guess i'm just too fussy. i don't like alot of things most people do in music and love alot of things everyone else seems to hate like instrumentals.i imagine that b. ferry's solo work is similar to his roxy music stuff. in fact, he was credited on the cover of my "street life" CD. i need to get into an adventerous mood again to try new tunes out. more often than not, my response to other's suggestions is "how could anyone like this?" LOL i'm sure those people would feel the same way about my favorites too.
The heart likes what the heart likes.Don't fret it.
Have to stress, that online(reduced data)samples are a mere shadow of their respective counterparts.
I sample via walkman w/decent head-phones at local used music outlets.Good way to hear truer examples,if able to to so.
oh, don't get me started on MP3. LOLit's a total step in the wrong direction. 16/44 digital is the MINIMUM that i'll listen to. after 20 years of mediocre CD resolution, 1/192 SACD and 24/96 DVD-A come along and what does everyone do? they embrace COMPRESSED lower resolution MP3. arrrrrrrgh!
i want MP3 to die. 16/44 wavs is as close to it as i'll ever get. i want to encode my vinyl to 24/96 DVDs, but i don't have the hardware to at the moment.
i bought pretty much everything in my collection except some old radio shows and a few taped albums. now that i've FINALLY accepted digital (took 10 years +) i won't settle for anything less than a CD or mint vinyl.
the ONLY songs i download are the samples i check out at record stores for something new to me.
As a confirmed vinylist, I always disliked the crude sound of first-generation CDs and I collected vinyl throughout the 80s and 90s.
Recently, I have converted many of my vinyl LPs to the 24/96 HR format.
The .wav files can be played directly via computer to hi-fi link, or used to produce DVD-Audio discs at various quality levels, or even down-sampled to produce great sounding CD/Rs.
Many vinylists should be able to listen to them without experiencing too many withdrawal symptoms.
The resulting files are a little harder and more "in-your-face" than vinyl, but they "grow" on you, becoming quite addictive after a while.
The captured information levels can be awesome, providing you use high quality vinyl, software and hardware.
I understand that you must retain ALL your viyl originals, have only one digital copy at any one time and never sell or give away any digital copies.
I could go on for a long time about compressed files, DAB radio and such, but I have resisted the urge.
Quite a number of things on your lists fall under what would be considered "indie" bands. That shows you have a modicum of good taste. But you'll have to buy artist albums as you won't find what you want on one magical disc.My advice is to go to my website and research bands that catch your interest, as I could literally be here all day listing things for you.
To get you started, I think what you are looking for is stuff like Holm, or Maria Taylor. Slightly older stuff would include Club 8 or Waltz For Debbie. But there is tons to be sure. Good luck in your hunt.
there HAVE been such compilations in the past. apparently you don't remember the TV ads for such collections in various genres from sould to one compilation that in fact DID feature "you take my breath away" and "lady in red".the rhino collection that i mentioned features MANY of the tracks i'm interested in, but for $70 for 7 discs, it also features alot of junk i'm not interested in like "cum on feel the noiz".
i'm not a big fan of buying one disc for one song. i guess i'll never burn that "ultimate disc" i want to because i'm not going to buy 30 CDs to do it.
i don't know that i really "have taste", i just like what i like. anyone that likes similar material would say that while the person that buys the rhino collection for quiet roit would say the opposite.
everyone is entitled to their opinions.
probably 1/2 of my CD collection is compilations and best of discs. i love rhino and ryko.
My point was that they don't sell music under the notion that "it's good to screw to". (which was a joke on my part) YES, they do (or at least did) sell compilations using words such as "romance" or "love songs" but as you yourself point out what one person thinks qualifies as that the next will not.The comment about "taste" was also a joke. You took it far too seriously.
I never suggested you buy a disc for one song either. I suggested you buy a disc for all of them and was trying to point out some that fit that description, but like the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water..... You seem to have all the answers you want to the questions you already asked, which makes me wonder why you asked in the first place.
yep.
On the first intimate night with my future wife she had the radio on the local rock station, and they played Todd Rundgren's S-L-U-T.That one will really get her in the mood.
However, a few that I didn't see below that would be good:
10CC "I'm not in Love"
about anything Julie London ever recorded
Moody Blues "Nights in White Satin" (the single version, which omits the poem)
Fairport Convention/The Hiring Fair
There's a really erotic song on Kate Bush's debut album, but its title escape's me.
i'm pretty sure i DID mention 10cc's "i'm not in love" in my original list. it's a great song that was also pretty far ahead of it's time. i think it was godley and creme's doing.i have "the best of kate bush". she does have a lovely voice for sure and many of her songs are laid back, but i can't recall any makeout tunes per se. i just listened to the disc again within the past week too as i figured it would sound good with my system's new midrange magic.
"nights in white satin" definately a great song about propalactics. i forgot it as i don't have it in my collection yet. LOL i agree about the poem too. on the other hand, i really like "fly like an eagle" with the long synthesizer riff at the end.
as to julie london... i LOVE the "hot toddy" track i have at the end of a bonus disc that i have that came in the back of a lounge music encyclopedia. it was a great $10 deal at an overstock book warehouse that used to be in my town. hot toddy was definately THE best track on the disc.
"doo doo dee oot doot doot doo dee oot
doot doot doo
doot doot doo"for such an old song, it sounds killer too. technology might have advanced alot, but there's something to be said for the simpler good old days.
don't forget "the assotiation" they have ALOT of great mellow tracks. "never my love" is my favorite for the bouncy piano riffs, but they have a few others.
In addition to Spandau Ballet suggested below, how about:Pet Shop Boys - Albums: Please and Actually - Songs: West End Girls, It's a Sin, Rent, Suburbia etc.
Arcadia (Duran spin off) - Album: So Red the Rose (it was a fave) - Songs: Election Day and The Promise etc.
ABC - various albums (lots of variet on each), but there must be a "best of..." - Songs: sooo many, but Be Near Me, Look of Love, and When Smokey Sings are three that spring to mind.
Modern English? - Song: Melt With You?
Alphaville - Album: Breathtaking Blue - Songs: various (this choice is a little obscure maybe)
Now, outside the "New Romatic" monika - and a little closer to Sordidman's suggestions:
Rebirth of Cool compilations, especially 5 and maybe 6.
La Mezzanine de l'Alcazar - a two disk set, one of which is labelled "Seduction Time"... very nice, but maybe not what you are looking for.
Cheers, Raymond
PS. Heaven 17 was a spin off from Human League (great band) that may also be worth checking out.
Okay, I feel dirty associating this band with the New Romatic mvt - they most certainly are not - but may be what you are looking for.The Church - Album: Best Of - Songs: The Unguarded Moment, Under the Milky Way, Metropolis, Almost With You.
Apologies to Steve K and co.
i actually own an A.B.C. album with "the look of love" on it already. they are in the ballpark for sure, but don't have quite the pull of the best anthems out there.i looked into "human league" already earlier today, but didn't hear anything trule sexy on their "best of" disc with the possible exception of "human". human league is more of a formerly way overplayed dance pop band.
spandau ballet? i remember the name, but can't place any of their hits, but i'm pretty sure they're close to what i'm looking for.
pet shop boys? wow! i can't believe i forgot them. they definately have the new romantic sound for sure.
modern english? "i will melt with you" is a HUGE balled and definately essential. as soon as i read the title, i remembered the song and was brought back in time 20 years. wow. has it really been that long already?
i might even have a decent track on my "best of new order" compilation if i ever pull it of my shelf and listen again. from what i remember, they were more clubbish though.
way back in the day, i wasn't really into new romantic music much. i was more into "the art of noise" and hip-hop back when it really was hip-hop and not the OPPOSITE of "get out of the gangs and do something positive" which much of what is called hip-hop is today.
when i mentioned "scritti politti", i was only thinking of the "perfect way" track that i have on some compilation, but found "the word girl" earlier today which is a pure keeper.
i also remembered suzanne vega's minor hit "tom's diner" today. it's all coming back in bits and pieces... oh no... i just thought of "wierd science". HELP!
hey... thanks alot for that reply. you've reminded me of alot of potential material to track down and buy for those perfect "pure hits" compilations and 5 discs worth of relaxation.
... I type while listening to Waiting for the Siren's Call. Still don't know how I feel about this album tho.Glad I could hlep a little.
Cheers, Raymond.
PS. Human League may have been over played - especially their dancier pop stuff - but there may be more to them than record companies and radio stations promoted.
that are Hip Pop and away from the 80s Visage, puffy shirt routine...1. HiFidelity Lounge number 1, - on Guidance Recordings.
2. Kruder and Dorfmeister, - the K&D Sessions.
3. Back to Mine, Groove Armada.
4. Thievery Corporation, the Mirror Conspiracy
5. Blunted, Blunted two on Shadow Records. These discs will bring you what you're seeking and then some....
if you don't know where you come from, then you don't know where to go, we can all try to get there if we reach
i can't recall how they sounded, but i thought that thievery corp. and K&D sounded alot like what i call "generic house music" as much electronic music sounds exactly the same to me. i'll have to give them a second listen though as now my priorities have changed a little.as a recommendation to you, you might like:
nightmares on wax: smoker's delight
cabaret voltaire: plasticity
and
dubnology (various artists)
as these discs offer some nice laid back electronic music without the "every track sounds like every other band that wants to do electronic but sounds like boring house music" patience strain. i've hated probably 80% of the electronic bands i've heard (or more) as they all do the same "thumpthumpthumpthump" junk with the same effects. oh... don't get me started on "technotronic"! LOLi bought the 4 disc "dubnology" collection without any clue to what it was and was amazed at the sheer variety on the disc. it makes references to genres such as industrial and house, but without going all the way in and losing it's flavor. it's a pretty funky collection. i'm picky, but every disc side has at least 3-4 decent tracks and many others aren't bad. considering how crappy and unoriginal many of the popular electronic bands i've heard like "the chemical brothers" or "the something or other twins" (something to that effect, whatever they're called) are, this disc came as quite a surprise to me.
i'll take a listen to your list soon. i got burned out on auditions after so many R&B dead ends earlier today.
it's been so long that i'd forgotten the name of the genre i'm most interested in (new romantic). after i thought of a couple of new additions and heard a couple more oldies on the radio, i came up with these classic songs. a few of them were in the back of my mind (esp. don't dream it's over) but i just couldn't think of them. then i found a 7 disc rhino records 80s compilation that had many of the great new romantic songs.for anyone interested in modern pop (with a couple of oldies):
leave in silence: depeche mode
never my love: the association***
afternoon delight: the starland vocal band
real love: mary j. blige***
how soon is now: the smiths
life in a northern town: dream academy
shake you down: gregory abbot***
face to face: siouxsie sioux and the banshees
i'm not in love: 10cc***
lovefool: the cardigans***
take on me: a-ha
the look of love (part 1): A.B.C.
da da da: trio***
brass in pocket: the pretenders
come on eileen: dexy's midnight runners
sweet dreams (are made of this): the eurythmics***
always something there to remind me: naked eyes*******
too shy: kajagoogoo***
don't you (forget about me): simple minds
don't dream it's over: crowded house*******
don't worry be happy: bobby mc farrenand i meant "close to me" by the cure but named a line from the song that was the name of the album it was on by mistake
now i'm off to check out everyone elses recommendations so far. thanks again
The "sweet soul" love song triumverate.
aren't those motown sound bands? i'm positive that i've heard the stylistics before at the very least.just reading your reply, i was reminded of "never my love" by the association in the oldies dept.
i'll have to look into those bands to see if they agree with my tastes or not.
No, they were "Philly/NJ based". The ultimate falsetto-led sweet Philly Soul sound. The Delfonics & Stylistics were produced by Thom Bell, who used to be with Gamble/Huff, until going on his own with incredible strings, oboe, tympani, etc arrangements. The themes were always about love.
i still haven't gotten around to checking your list out. i totally got burned out on auditions today after an hour's worth of other R&B recommendations that totally didn't work for me. i'm not really into the 60's R&B sound. i'd rather go back further to doowop, but i am actively listening to everything everyone is recommending.regardless, the variety here should be a good resource for anyone looking for some good mood music.
"Now,"Urban Hang suite,"Embrya...irresistible tempo jams'& grooves
even the pets get nervous when we play Maxwell
sincerely beanz
never even heard of that group/person. i'll have to give it a listen on some site's audio samples.
sincerely beanz
i was liking "hotel intro" when i first listened to the disc which sounded a little bit like the band "nightmares on wax" with it's mellow synths and bouncy beat, but as soon as track 2 came on, i wasn't liking it. i couldn't get into any of the 1/2 dozen or so tracks that i heard after that. i couldn't picture buying a 2 disc set for one song unless i win the lottery.wow... this is the second recommendation that i lisened to that started with an instrumental that i liked but then was ruined by singing after that. i'm not really into songs for the most part. nearly half of my compilation discs are instrumentals. i tend to like the instrumental b-sides to hip-hop better too.
if you like the "hotel" track, check nighmares on wax "smoker's delight" CD out. you might like it.
thanks for recommending that one song. it's too bad that it was the opposite of the rest of their songs.
will do thanks.it's really a shame that much of the best music in the world never gets played on the radio.
WOW!that makes 3 discs in a row that i listened to that started with a nice instrumental and that totally stopped working for me on the very next track and every other one after that because of vocals. i was liking "the urban theme" by maxwell and thought i'd found a great mellow funk instrumental disc, but i just couldn't get into the vocal style at all. it's kind of a jazzy "sing like your talking" lyric style. oooooh i don't like that at all. sorry thanks for sharing though. hopefully someone curious that reads the thread will discover something new to like. i saw the disc that i chose to sample had 4 1/2 stars... that's not shabby.
i'm beginning to think that my tastes in music are very different from most asylum members.
you're familiar with sade aren't you? she really does soul funk that sounds sexy to my ears.
i hope all the tracks i listed aren't driving the rest of you nuts if you're checking them out.
.
if barry white is who i think he is, he's the R&B guy that made a few appearances on ally mc beal.he's definately a standard, but i'm looking more for "electropop" like most of the songs in my list (not enough space in topic to be more specific) than symphonic R&B. i don't see what everyone sees in him if he's the raspy voiced bearded guy i'm thinking of, but i'm not a woman. LOL
still, i'll look into his stuff deeper. maybe he does something that i would like that i haven't heard yet.
i must say, i'm not a big fan of "sexy talking" songs. the theme from "shaft" drives me nuts! LOL i'd like the song "jungle fever" by the chakachas ALOT better if it were an instrumental. it has an awesome beat.
an R&B song that's closer to what i'm looking for is the song "shake you down" by gregory o'neil. i just remembered it right now.
thanks for the reply. i'll definately look into barry white. i probably wouldn't have thought of him in a million years.
This is not my area of expertise, but surely Spandau Ballet's "True" should be on the list.Cheers, Raymond.
PS. What, Barry can't get you going? How could that possibly be? ;)
yes... that's a great song that i've always liked and never remember. thanks. that's just the kind of song i'm looking for.
i'm not really into R&B too much. i thought i was wrong about barry after hearing the long forgotten "love's theme" instrumental which opens one of his collections, but as soon as i heard the next track which opened with him blabbing (along with several other tracks) i knew i'm not a barry white fan.i'm not at all a fan (in fact you might even say i flat out despise) "strokin'" by clance carter which is a similar "sexed up" R&B jam. if i hear something that direct, i want it to be a woman singing it eg.
"love to love you baby" by donna summerbarry white's talking style comes off as pretentious to me and his voice is pretty ragged. thanks for recommending him though, but i think most of the other recommendations others have made aren't going to work for me either. i hope you don't take my reply personally. i have pretty specific tastes. when it comes to the 60s, i'm mostly into bubblegum and for the 70s, more of the offbeat rock.
if i were to get into romantic oldies... i'd probably go back another decade to doo-wop eg.
"there's a moon out tonight" etc.i'm sure you'd probably hate alot of the wierd music i'm into too.
nt
all green is another artist that's more R&B than pop to me (and not female) but i'll still look the disc up. i know i've heard him before, but i can't think of anything that i liked.i'm more keen on "electropop" but you never know.
thanks for the reply. i'll look into this artist that was way off my radar too.
