and favorite oxymoron - Liberal, KS.. up US 54.. We used to do high school sports, etc, with Greensburg. I think I got in trouble once on a school trip there. We borrowed the school station wagon from one of the coaches and visited some girls in the other motel. This may have been the trip where we opened some sodas in one of those old syle vertical stack machines where you just needed an opener and a cup to catch the drink in..Greensburg was famous all over southwest Kansas for that damn 'deepest hand dug well'. We would all have been green with envy about that well if we weren't already 'the pancake hub' AND the home of Dorothy and Oz, but that's a different tornado. A few miles away, Dodge City, our other HS rival, also was famous, because of Gunsmoke. That tornado really screwed up Greensburg. It should serve to get them talking more about climate change.
I was quite stunned by the total flattening of Greensburg. That was a MEAN bastard of a storm.

Yep, spent Friday, Saturday, & Sunday nites in the basement with the TV radar display on; close calls all three. Not a basement as most imagine; ours is finished in real knotty pine & tile or carpet, has a fireplace, dry bar, jukebox, cook stove, full bathroom, & spare bedroom. We normally spend a lot of time there anyway & listening to Jazz on PBS FM Saturday evenings. 'Cept for worry for friends, we were OK. One tornado thankfully lifted off the ground as it passed directly overhead. Perhaps Nature was extending professional courtesy as I've had my near death experience (almost electrocuted as a power-grid lineman; see My Experience posted in TubesDIY forum catagory). You take care too, Timbo (a Traveling Nurse cousin contracted a rare sinus infection while working in the Aussie Outback last year; she is in Nebaraska USA now, still with sinus complications & a swollen face). Small world.
Since I've lasted this long after my accident, my Doctors have recently taken me OFF the endangered species list. Still have health issues but I'm not expected to drop tomorrow as they previously warned. Whew!
That is great news. You must have a strong constitution.
Hi ya Timbo, Maybe shoulda shot Dorothy before she killed those OZ witches, eh? That EF 5 rated tornado Friday nite passed just a few miles from us, remained on the ground for 5 hours & traversed about 100 miles, doing damage to half-dozen towns where we have friends or family. A 1,000-pound meteorite is also missing from display @ former Greensburg (maybe flung back into space?). BTW, 34 miles from Greensburg to the Oklahoma border = 1/2 hour leisure drive @ the posted speed limit is actual factual.
Thank you very much Mr. Timbo but you've got to keep in mind that Kansas is a very good sized state. I live near Kansas City and Greensburg is about 300 miles away from here. Even at Sunflower State driving speed, that's almost five hours drive. What's left of Greensburg is still another hour's drive or so to the Oklahoma border.
Greensburg is devestated. The town of approximately 1600 residents has been almost leveled with more than 95% of the buildings destroyed. That includes the fire station, high school, churches and private residences. The county hospital was severely damaged and all the local injured had to be taken to area hospitals as far away as 100 miles. Before Friday's tornado, Greensburg's main claim to fame was that it was home to the world's deepest hand dug well.
Fortunately, there was at least 20 minutes of tornadoe warning sirens before the calamity actually struck. No one was really ready for wind speeds of about 200 MPH.
While many people wouldn't live out here because of tornadoes, I've got to say that I've never seen one in 35 years or so. There have been tornadoes that struck within 15 miles of my house during that time. I try to keep it all in perspective; as bad as a tornado might be, they're usually within a small patch of real estate. Compare them to a hurricane like Katrina where everyone in their path is going to be hit hard.
Even though Kansas is a state with concealed handgun laws, I think it would've been hard to draw a good bead on a 3/4-1 1/4 mile wide funnel cloud with debris being thrown at 200 MPH. The long range weather forecast calls for thunderstorms and possible severe weather for the next five days; I might get my chance to take out my rifle yet.
