I would like to build a pair of bookshelf speakers from a DIY kit with the following objectives (in order of priority):1. Learn and experience how speakers are built.
2. Enjoy nice sound in my bedroom at a relative bargain. My experience is nil. I am, however, not afraid. Therefor I seek recommendations on a DIY speaker kit that will really take me through the process (good, clear instructions). Would like to spend around $200. Really appreciate any recommendations/advice.
thanks.

Zillions of choices: spend some time at the PartsExpress and Madisound websites. Also take a look at www.t-linespeakers.org and www.fullrangedriver.com for some other ideas.
For a direct answer to your question: How about the PartsExpress BR-1 two way?
all the best,

Yup. Madisound's Sledgling would be another obvious choice. If you have some woodworking tools and skills there's much of interest here: http://www.melhuish.org/audio/DIYTQ8.html
The BR-1 kit has gotten positive reviews, but I'd recommend using the Dennis Murphy crossover design instead of the OEM crossover. Madisound also has some good bookshelf kits, but they aren't supplying cabinets for some of them. Parts Express has cabinets that might work or one could consider building their own.
Stein.audio.com builds all qualitys and types of DIY speaker cabinets to order. Prices are reasonable.
Well so do I, but I'm not here to plug my own work or solicit business!
