Many of us who live here in NYC consider the Princeton Record Exchange, in New Jersey, to be one of the best places in the world to buy used LP's and CD's. Their used CD collection might be the best I personally have seen in the ti- state area. Visit their website to see what I mean. It is a fairly pleasant and easy 1 hour train ride from the city. You will not be dissapointed at the selection or the prices.
Good Luck,

Many of us here in New Jersey prefer Academy Records and Cds at 12 W.18th St. in New York. My problem with the Princeton Record Exchange is the outrageously high prices for used and new. Also, they pay peanuts when you sell. Everything is fifty cents. If you walked in with the Beatles "Butcher Block" they'd probably offer $5. Give Academy a try.
I go there for jazz and classical, not rock. I've gotten many virtually perfect used cd's there, usually somewhere between $4-10. They also have a pretty damn interesting selection of quality classical vinyl in the back (pretty good turnover too), and the prices for that are the best I've found anywhere. Gotta say though, I've never been to the Princeton joint.I went to the Jazz Record Center yesterday to get a sealed Classic issue of a jazz LP. They do have a LARGE selection of jazz LP's, but overall I don't think you'll find many bargains there.
Never caught Academy when they were holding as much Jazz as Princeton always seems to have. The Jazz Record Center in Chelsea has a good selection, but high prices and the turnover doesn't seem to be so quick sometimes. Should have mentioned I was looking from a Jazz- buyer's perspective...
Those places mentioned and a few others which I cannot remember the names unfortunately inclusive of locations on Bleeker Street.Princeton is strictly dependent on collections from sellers and I haven't had much luck in the past with them lately.
