This is about a year old and likely has been posted before. The interesting angle here is it is well written by someone a lot younger than most of us! Confirms to me at least why I can't enjoy some of the newer music by K T Tunstall, Killers, Joss Stone, etc - even tho I love them on the radio. They sound absoluteley awful on my system!

Follow Ups:
Love it on the radio, on the ipod and cranked in my car with the top down, but missing something on the big rig. That is a shame because I really like the tunes.I really miss MTV Unplugged when the greats would give it a go without the tech. I found it to be a talent revealing series in a good way.
I saw the citation on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Californication".... I heard a live (maybe even bootleg) version of this song, and by the crowd noise, the feed was of very good quality, but the sound from the band was just like the studio version. "Loud and compressed" is the only way they can present their music. Also note that for how "hot" a lot of recordings are, half of the problem is that most consumer playback products lack linearity, making recordings sound "hotter" than they actually are.
The author isn't even aware of the "pitch correction" that has engulfed the music industry, which basically makes every vocalist sound generic.... Devoid of character.
This leads to another issue- How good would a lot of these artists sound if the processing is taken away? I'm not going to speculate, but I do think the scarcity of "non-overprocessed" pop and rock productions today is alarming, if not embarrassing.
There must be a few non-over processed pop recordings - any worth seeking out in your opinion?
"There must be a few non-over processed pop recordings - any worth seeking out in your opinion?"Very few in recent time.... And I've mentioned them in the past.
The most notable one, albeit more "rock" than "pop", is the Who- "Endless Wire"....
Some other good ones are Nickel Creek- "Why Should the Fire Die", Aleks Syntek- "Mundo Lite", and anything by Ian Thomas.
nt.
Would that it were so.
