In Reply to: "Using it in the tape loop as you are, I wouldn't expect a lot of difference." Why not? posted by Markw* on March 28, 2007 at 07:53:29:
my experience is that the prime benefit of these things is in the buffer function, filtering out the interference that CDPs, and tape decks for that matter, tend to pick up before it enters the preamp. The stable load the unit presents to the CDP's output section may be of benefit in some cases too. All it can really do as he's using it is run the signal through another circuit. If the unit is linear and low distortion as Musical Fidelity claims, it really shouldn't do anything to the sound.

I was going on this, from the ad:"The X-10v3 is a tube output stage that can be added to any system; perfect behind any digital player, phono stage, in a tape monitor loop or between your preamp and amp."
I guess I thought I was going to get some of that magic tube pixie dust!
I remember one retailer suggested hooking up two of the original X10-Ds, daisy chainstyle. They didn't explain why, just that it sounded better. If you can get hold of any CD player, try it with and without the buffer, I think you would hear a difference.
Thanks. I tried switching this in/out on the tape monitor, while playing a CD. The results were the same as for the phono - nothing. Would I have to straight-line it to get a difference?Would this box make a difference on an ipod docking station between the station and the receiver? (Ok, no flaming for using an ipod, please.)
My nano pod inverts so if the ipod inverts and the X10 D inverts you'd get the correct polarity playback.
is the best answer I can give you on either question. I'd say give it a try. If you can't find an application that gives you satisfaction, I'd contact Musicdirect and tell them that it isn't giving the kind of results you expected from the advertising and that you would like to return it.
