I added four more bass traps in my listening room. I use the Risch DIY ASC copy recipe. I made 18" diameter 4' tall traps; big boys! I had three before and now have seven. They are big but look fine in the corners with the neutral burlap I put on them. Thanks to my wife for her off the chart WAF and helping by attaching the batting/burlap outer layer sewing the burlap seam. Having three before I just put them up and knew they helped. Now with seven I played around finding the best configuration. I found that location not only changed the bass response but the image balance in my highly asymmetric room as well. Thanks to AA, Jon others who have helped motivate me to continue to improve my room treatments. Big difference!
Follow Ups:
Just make sure you don't shove them all the way into the corners. Allow a few inches between the trap and the corner.
I just had my first experience with bass trap 2months ago.
I borrowed 2 ASC tubetraps home and push them right into the 2 front corners as I always see in ASC pictures. I also experimented, as you mentioned, leaving about 4 inches between the traps and the corners, and it improved the soundstaging. What's the explanation that leaving a gap makes the bass traps sound better, I wonder...!
It all depends on what type of Bass Trap it is.If it is a 1/4 or 1/2 round Bass Trap, then they need to be mounted as close to the wall/corner as possible, preferably with no air gap between the back of the trap and the walls/corner, to be most efficient.
If it is a Full round Bass Trap, then placement experimentation with regards to the wall/corner boundries will certainly pay off due to the construction differences as each type of Bass Trap is specifically designed to address different room acoustic issues.
Cheers,
I used to follow the basic guidelines of placing them in the four corners and midpoints of the room. With my new room (and measuring the results this time), I found that stuffing a lot of them behind my dipoles significantly smoothed out the bass. While your situation will likely vary from mine, the by-the-book way isn't necessarily always the best.

I have a pair of Ambience Superslim 1800se (kindly check them out at www.ambiencespeakers.com.au) and I have very similar configuration with several GIK Acoustic Panels behind them (including one Monster Trap 7.5" total thickness) Sound is much better in every sense. In total I have 7 GIK Acoustic Panels strategically place behind and around the speakers and subwoofer, great results. Best, Antonio Machado.
So where are the subwoofers? :-)
Best regards,
We don't need woofers where we're going. (with apologies to Dr. Emmett Brown). :)rw
Outstanding, and looks good.
