I'm in a similar situation. I'm a student who has to pinch pennies for a while to save up for upgrades. I'm right in the middle of an upgrade fever right now, in fact... my power amp died about a week ago and I figured that that was as good an excuse as any to go all-tube.To make it all work, I have to make a sort of "road map" or plan of attack, spelling out exactly what I'm going to buy and in what order. The basic idea here is to start as extravagant as what might be possible, then whittle and whittle and whittle some more costs away until it gets to a reasonable price. Try to be fairly even in the pricing so you can get things at regular intervals and not get discouraged.
Of my projected system, this is what I have:
Music Hall MMF-5 turntable.
Long list, eh? There's a "maybe" on there, which is the speakers (EPI M100s). If they work okay with the SET amplifier I just ordered (either 2 or 2.5 watts depending on whether it's in 45 or 2A3 configuration), they're part of the system for good. Otherwise, I'll get an old used pair of Klipsch Heresys (I might get them eventually anyway). I've got that amplifier ordered... and what's next on the list:
WooAudio 3 (preamp and head amp in one)
Scott Nixon USB Tube DAC
Ming Da MC757-RD (phono stage)and that's it! Cost of those before shipping are roughly (when I checked) $470, $600 (inc. PSU), and $269 respectively. Considering I'm going to be selling my old things, figuring to pull in some $650 on the conservative side, that's some $690 I need to save for my whole system. I also need to get my turntable repaired (goddamned snapped a tonearm-to-cartridge wire because the connector was gripping the pin too tightly: the tweezers slipped, grabbed the green wire, and pulled it right off), get a new stylus for my Goldring (moving up from a 1012GX to a 1042), and buy various tubes, to have as backups and to experiment with extensive rolling. It'll be fun.
Stuff like this can be done on the cheap... people think we're crazy because a certain element spends thousands of dollars for things like power cords. No offense intended to them at all! It's just that people are always amazed that I can afford a really good stereo, and it's really not all that difficult.
yet you say tubes forever, and that should not be so adamant a statement. How do the Von Schw. compare to Vandersteen 1C's, if you did the comparison?I use SS with phono, cheap compared to those high end guys, and it's pretty good and natural, although it won't rock with Klipsch power and the digital rig in mine needs some help.
Budget? No, but very tasteful and careful is closer to an apt description. See my vintage experiments system.
The Jolida gear is probably the best tube gear for the money but its not cheap. My current stereo system costs me 300$ I'd call that a budget system...
Akai amp 6$ from the thrift
Dynaco A25 speakers 6$ from the thrift
Toshiba CD/DVD 99$
Sony 2251 turntable 150$
Audio Tehcnica Cartridge 100$
Wow thats a budget system, lol
you were raving about not so long ago?
setup. good spot for them except they are too big there.
...regards...tr
What $50 "miracle speakers?" Kinda curious about your statement
Now around $75 a pair at Best Buy. Do a search for all the discussions.
Wow a 50% increase in price. Certainly not the bargain they once were.
Is the big Jolida powerful enough in your system. I have heard the amp in a showroom before and liked the sound, but never in a home set up.
Big and powerful for sure! The integrated amp runs my Vr2's just fine, everything blends in well
It's a good start. But you need to work on speaker positioning and get that big ole honkin' tv out of the middle.
Wow, cool system, does the TV mess up the soundstage? One trick is to cover the rack/tv with a blanket or for real critical listening finding a diff spot for the speakers (pull them out) and then putting them back for every day use...v.i. (outta Croatia)
A bit, but not much. It does sound better with a nice blanket over the tv however in the near future I will not have the TV but just a dedicated audio room. It kinda looks weird when guest come over and see a large blanket over your main tv, lol
And you got to keep those tubes well ventilated!
Beautiful! How does it sound? I would like to listen to it.
Put a rug in front of your speakers if you haven't already.
By the way, although some would say this is a budget system, I would not. You have a lot invested, time, money, patience and planning. This is a true budget system that a friend of mine has.
He built the speakers himself and has been slowly upgrading the last three years. I admire his dilligence and enthusiasm. He also knows what sounds good!
If you live in the Chicago land area stop by for a listen, I enjoy talking and meeting with fellow audiophiles plus I like to get some pointers on the overall sound.
