...just as SACD and DVD-A had to displace CD from it's throne.
Compare the Blu line with that of DVD to see how far it has to go before being in the same ball-park.
With better players and competitively priced software who knows, but it'll be next year at the earliest before we know if there's anything like a serious challenge in the offing.
For now however, although I've spurned upsampling in CD players I have to admit that upscaling in DVD players is definately effective and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD has got it's work cut out.

  I think you and many others in AA suffer from a SACD/DVD Audio battle burnout.
  Compared to Europe, a 50" or 60" RPTV was normal and cheap in USA.
  On such a big screen NTSC looks bad, and HDTV look clearly better.
  HDTV is mainstream in USA, normal TV will close 2009 in USA, and NTSC is much worse than PAL.
  Sales of HDTV in USA are soon close to 30% of population.
  So the USA Blu ray have an easy fight against DVD.
  In Europe we lack HDTV transmissions, we use smaller screens, and PAL do look good.
  So it will take longer in Europe. But flatscreens are popular, many are HDTV ready, and you can see the difference.

    I'm not arguing that HD isn't superior to SD (although the difference isn't as pronounced as some suggest), I'm saying that genuine HD software through a HD source component isn't sufficiently superior to SD (DVD) through an upscaling DVD source to justify the increase in price of the software and hardware as things stand.
    Companies who provide HD broadcasts use the same upscaling chip as used in Denon DVD players so obviously there's every users of the Denon players are geting HD broadcast quality in the home via DVD.
    Broadcasts filmed in HD will no doubt be a vast improvement and I've seen genuine HD quality on relatively humble 42" and 50" displays which knocked upscaled DVD into a cocked hat, but it wasn't via a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player. :0)

        I'm not your opponent but am civilised. :0)
        I do hope Blu-Ray or HD-DVD succeed, because if they do it'll mean the price of the software has come down, but where is the battleship build, over engineered player to showcase either format and impress 'videophiles'?
        Once again the race to get one format out before the other has resulted in poor implementations of the technology with the audio side in particular suffering, and........
        We could both go on and on but as you say, only time will tell and I think I'll be contributing to another thread of yours in a few months time Ole when we'll have a better idea of how things are developing; if you become involved in manufacturing a player once the technology is more advanced I'll look forward to hearing about it and will be confident it'll tick all the right boxes when it comes to playback.
        For now I've just got the news that my partner's pregnant so I've got other things to concentrate on for the time being. :0)
