...that makes me ashamed to be an aging, over-privileged white guy.

It was wrong of me to label this message "racist." I'm grateful that you folks weren't harder on me than you were.Such charges shouldn't be made lightly. I pulled the string too quick. I'm sorry.
since *everyone has hit SEND a little too quickly.(and, it's still a sucky non-musical 'art-form', albeit commercialy succesful...)

(but I like it anyway).
...without the odd "shoot-from-the-hip knee-jerk" reaction? If I'm not eating crow at least once a month, then I figure I'm being too politically correct for my own good.
Good on 'ya for expressing yourself!
It takes a big man to admit he made a boo-boo. I should know, I've made more than a few meself. I've actually developed a taste for crow...
Hey, isn't that a racist joke?:-)
If someone asked me why I thought rap music seems to be highly-regarded by the media and public, my top reason is people simply fear they'd be deemed a "racist" if they stated what they really thought. The core of "political correctness."I also think people constantly playing the race card has dulled the public awareness of the true evils of racism. I recently met someone who thought Dick Cheney was the closest thing we've had to the infamous German leader, yet had no idea who Tom Metzger was.
Maybe I don't come into contact with the same "media and public" as you but (a) the publicity accorded rap presumably has something to do with that fact that it generates over ten billion dollars a year in sales and (b) the publicity in the mainstream media tends to be, if you pull up a selection, pretty negative. No need to spin fantasies of political correctness.

Maybe on AA, but not necessarily elsewhere....
"No need to spin fantasies of political correctness."
The "fantasy" was that very "racism" accusation in this thread. It's the very core. Seeing a point of view that's disliked, and instead of kindly pointing out the fallacy of the view, just conveniently call him a racist. The "political correctness" is the shouting down of opinion with over-the-top accusation, creating fear amongst others that they too can be viewed as "racists" for stating such opinion. The use and threat of defamation to stifle opinion.
I'm just getting sick of the tactic, whether it's called "political correctness" or something else.

Whenever I hear someone invoke that phrase, I immediately zone out. It helps people promote certain personal and political agendas but itdemonstrates that the person invoking it has nothing interesting to say. Kinda like "absolute polarity" or "asynchronous oversampling."

Blocking out a problem, for whatever reason, does not automatically mean the problem doesn't exist. It's more-often a sign of someone being on the wrong side of an issue, where "zoning out" is a convenient method of avoiding that issue. For it makes your apology an act of convenience as well. It borders on cowardice.
Calling people "racist" and then apologizing gave people an impression of "caring", but the "zoning out" gave me the impression that your sole intent was to be **perceived** by others as caring. It's the one personal trait I have more problems with than just about anything else. For it's in essence riling people for the sole purpose of advancing self-image.

Or whatever.

That's pretty labored Todd. So you think I called a guy a racist in order to make people think well of me? It's a peculiar notion.

It's good to see that you were smart enough to see through my sinister manipulations. Congratulations.
The same mentality that reaches for the conversation-ending term "racist" is the same one that "zones out" any real thinking. Too bad.
but you have cough up some Pizza money! Hmmmm....? for whom, some needy organization, got it!... Boston Audio Society!
...can buy their own damn pizza.:-)
He was simply marking his entry into geezerhood :-)
I'm sure most white racists hate rap. But it doesn't follow that anyone who doesn't like rap must be a racist.
He was simply marking his entry into geezerhood :-)
Hehehe. Yup. When I was growing up, it was "That's not music! It's just noise!"
Now it's "That's not music! It's just talking!"

Nowhere in that message did he make a racist remark. Stop being such a pussy. Perhaps a big donation to the NAACP would assuage your guilt...

No Guru, No Method, No Teacher
Where in heaven's name do you get "racist"? Or is it merely your favorite way of shutting off an uncomfortable point of view?
"Where in heaven's name do you get 'racist'? Or is it merely your favorite way of shutting off an uncomfortable point of view?"The use and threat of defamatory accusation to muzzle opinion. The sickening part is the tactic works. But much of the blame has to go to those who avoid voicing opinion in fear of being called a "racist." To some, both accusers and accused, such accusation can play on their minds for years.
