Well for speakers it seems that the PSB Alpha B1 would be a smart choice, just $279, and able to play loud with ease according to the TAS March/07 review. After that the world is you oyster but I'd bet dines to dollars the folowing would really sing:
Blue Circle SBP SS Linestage Preamp ($495)
Blue Circle SBS SS Power Amplifier ($895)
Jolida JD 100 tube cd player (used around $550 should take you only a few $100 over budget)

I see that you are a Source man.You have suggested great equipments.I was wondering how better this would be than a system comprising of Arcam Solo and a pair of Monitor Audio Silver RS6.Here the speaker costs $1000.Anybody by any chance has listened to this combination?
I've heard a few Arcam integrated amplifiers and liked them a lot (driving Totem speakers). However I suspect that if the new low cost SB stuff from Blue Circle has the characteristic smoothness of the better stuff, and I don't doubt it judging by the comments on the CS integrated for example, that the Arcam would likely sound "hi-fi"-ish in comparison.Apparently Gilbert (Blue Circle) used to use the earlier Alpha at shows connected to multi-$1000 BC amplifiers to illustrate the relative importance of the electronics vs. the speakers. Knowledge of that made the recommendation of the new Alpha teamed with BC gear a natural. As far as the CD Player goes I had and enjoyed the Jolida... give attention to supports and add a good power cord and it's a very pleasing performer.
Arcam Solo costs $1600 as per Stereophile Directory.Perhaps no match for the BC combination.Your pick comes out on top.
