It's my impression that Norah Jones voice is recorded out of absolute polarity but her instrumental backup is recorded in absolute polarity. What do you think?
Follow Ups:
ha, she's alright, i suppose. but talk about an audiophile recording favorite that i can't even listen to any more. same goes for patricia barber and diana krall.i'm getting sick of cute chicks with pianos ;-)
gimme some brits with loud electric guitars. alvin lee anyone?
It's my distict impression that on that particular track (Come Away With Me), Norah had a chest cold. She sounds congested and stuffed up. It's the worst sounding vocal on that disc by far. It's the only track with this predicament, afaicr.
I think I've heard your one note song before, hundreds of times? One note songs are boring.

Pre-order two of 'em for me.
I think the CD is inverted completely, not just Norah's voice.....The symptom you're describing I'd slap on Bob Dylan's "Modern Times".....
I believe that the Norah Jones - Come Away With Me CD represents the Phil Spector "Wall of Sound Effect" in reverse. Perhaps you don't have a phase coherent let alone minimum phase speaker system. You may want to try headphones but some do invert polarity such as some Maxell and Stax electrostatic. But that shouldn't interfere with hearing if everything is in the same relative polarity on that CD.
I heard a snippet of this in a store before it became popular (it was already in the $5 bins before it became popular), and liked it a lot in the car on the way home. However, after one play on my home system, I gave it away to one of my kid's friends. The recording and mixing was so bad that it was painful. You could hear where guitar and other tracks were punching in and out, all the polarities were mixed up, and it's incredibly distracting. She and a bunch of other female vocalists owe their contracts to Eva Cassidy, as the record co.'s were afraid of missing another success and looking so bad all over again.
If the inversion is corrected, I perceive it to be an excellent recording....
...and be able to put those ninnies who like both Norah Jones and her recordings in our place.I like her voice, the music, and on my system the recording sounds very good. Hopefully you won't sue me.
just relating my experience. I liked it in the store and the car myself. My complaint was with the way it was all put together. If you enjoy it and it sounds good on your system, more power to you. I shoulda given my copy to you instead... I'm sure you don't like some things I like, and that doesn't bother me. de gustibus non dispudandum est.
...but I found your tone oddly dismissive and cocksure. I overreacted.
enjoy yer tunes tonight! I'm planning on doing the same a little later...
I felt it was not appropriate for me to put my feelings about the musical merrits of her recordings because that would only muddy the waters regarding their polarity. However, I think you've made some very astute observations that provide a lot of food for thought and listening.

If I hear one more demo with NJ my head will explode. But this could be caused by polarity;) Might be why so many feel this is could demo music.
I agree. Can't stand the sound of that record. It really sounds like she swallowed the microphone it is so closed miked and she is recorded so hot.I think her newest album is better, but she still sounds like a half-baked singer on most of her work. She is finally starting to sound like she owns the material she is singing about. I believe she will become a great singer and interpreter, because she is dedicated to her craft.
I think Norah Jones voice is recorded in absolute polarity but her instrumental backup is recorded out of absolute polarity.. how could you ever conclude otherwise!

Dear EvilSeav,I think it might be a good idea to recheck your CD playback system's polarity.
George S. Louis, Perfect Polarity Pundit
How would one check the polarity of one's system? Many components invert polarity. Some manufacturers put this information in the owner's manual, but many others do not. What standard would one use to judge the polarity of one's system?Beside, on a system that you would call "inverted" approximately half of all recorded material will play back correctly while the other half will play back incorrectly. I wouldn't call this system polarity inverted unless recordings were more consistent.
My impression is she is Gorgeous and sexy and beautiful and can sing me a lullaby anytime with that luscious voice and body..Her voice is seductively sedative IMHO and its all the best.
That to my man...She is one beautful work of art of middleastern descent.
and Caucasian (Ravi Shankar and Sue Jones).
Thats basically middeastern..Many of the foods culture and religion is identical.
What an astonishingly know-nothing comment. In fact both the food and religion are about as different as they could possibly be, along with just about everything else...
and all your good information esp. on Vintage. I am still just storing my old McIntosh set (C20, 2 MC 30, MR 66) acquired from my uncle.
The middle east is the region covering Egypt through to Saudi and Iran.Norah is Anglo-Indian, blessed with the musical genes of her father and the beauty of her mother.
Now, to paraphrase GBS, if it had been the other way round ....
