If you still like the music read on.I still love the rock music that I listened to in the late seventies and early eighties. However, this sort of music is unlistenable on my system which has been built around 'good recordings'. For instance, I cannot listen to Black in Black (AC/DC) or The Wall (Pink Floyd) for more than a few minutes on the system. They are simply too harsh. Doughter who mentioned cymbals I think has correctly identified the problem though not the solution.
I had a friend come over to my place a couple of months ago and he remarked that my system was so revealing that it showed exactly what was on the recording. This was in response to some harshness on some recordings. What a nice thing to say! Even nicer was that that was his honest opinion.
Fortunately for me I didn't find this situation acceptable. I tried to do something about it. Now I know that I can listen to The Wall (both CDs) without fatigue (haven't tried Back in Black yet). I still have some way to go - it is not perfect but I think it is achievable.
So, don't settle for the 'my system is so revealing it can only play good recordings' line.
BTW I also came to realise why my system ended the way it had - I had voiced it around 'good recordings'. I never played a rock recording whilst tweaking the system.
Follow Ups:
I can identify a poor recording better than ever, but I can enjoy it more than ever too.

Right on the money. I voiced my system in the same manner only to one day realize I was only listening to a handful of those good sounding CDs. Forget that. Made some changes and now I'm enjoying all of my music collection without sacrificing resolution. Along the way I did wonder if this was possible until I stumbled onto the right combo of components. Specifically, amp and speaker synergy seemed most important.
Nice post. I found that a good system should really be able to play all of it but there will still be concessions.
I am not quite there myself yet. Room treatments can help however.
