I agree, a one month audition is pretty unrealistic. I have 3 dealers in my area, 2 of which allow home demo's - the 3rd is similiar to the first one in your example. He brings it to you and controls the demo - no thanks. The other two offer what I expect to be reasonable demo's, couple days. A week max if you are REALLY interested in the peice.
On a few occasions I have been able to demo for more then a week, but that is pretty unusual. Most of the dealers don't like to demo for longer becuase it is thier only demo unit and it will be out of circulation from in store demo's.
A couple of days is generally about what you can reasonably expect in most circumstances. For me,sometimes it's enough time to determine if I like it sometimes not. My dealers have become used to the fact I may need to demo a unit a couple of times to make a decision. They will allow it becuase I am diligent about bringing it back on time and in the same condition in which it was loaned.
I would consider a couple to 3 days is about what you can reasonably expect from a dealer.

I agree with you...a 2 to 3 day demo is usually adequate unless the equipment is not operating as it should. But, in my area, only one dealer will avail himself to this and it is always for cables only (no equipment).Goodwin's High End has earned my business for their generous audition period. Also, Audio System out of Austin, Texas (Mark Lyon). Mark is a true professional and I just look forward to doing business with him. I have already made a fairly significant purchase with him ($6000 plus) and look forward to many more...
I agree, it's nice to have a good local dealer!! My dealers are pretty good about it with the exception of speakers. They will do speakers, but it's kind of a pain for them and the risk of "dings" is higher. I generally operate under the assumption that if I "ding" it - I either bought it or at least owe the "ding" damage to make the dealer whole.
If I really like a speaker and am REALLY interested, they will allow an in home demo. But personally, I have to feel pretty sure I am ready to buy and am just confirming my decision if I ask for an in home demo of speakers.
what you are suggesting, "a really nice dealer". I never ding, damage, any player or any of their equipment. I always return it as it was delivered to me. A "really nice dealer" hardly exisits in Dallas for a 2- to 3- day demo for equipment. If you know of one, please clue me in. I have never had a dealer complain about an issue with a product that I returned (ding, etc). Geeze, I never thought of a ding because I protect their gear like it is solid gold.
