They make a very easily heard and measured difference. Jars of pebbles probably don't unless they're very large.
Follow Ups:
I'll try trapping them next time. ;~)
always worked for me! surface lure though so works best when the water is warm

Why not go to costco and buy those beautiful 7 foot high fake tree's. they look excellent and are terrific bass traps. If you don't already know, outside trees with leaves are great sound barriers. So fake inside trees work in much the same way.
You guys should see what I have in the corners now. Some 2' wide 4" thick Knauff rigid fiberglass traps. Boy are they big and U G L Y!
lol...next will be some DIY diffusers for the rear. they should be ugly as well ;)
Thanks for the compliment on my equipment. Your right...the traps (old and new) are Ugly :(
You are correct. A big plant makes an excellent bass trap.
...
I think I will.
I'm implying that we should have some fun.
The mention of "bass traps" and "pebbles" was merely to indicate that I might be susceptible to any number of tweaks.
Ok - I confess. I have all kinds of smoke and mirrors in my audio set-ups. Except for Jon Risch bass traps and pebbles. Haven't gone down that road. Yet. Doesn't mean I don't think they might not work. 'Specially the traps. I know they will Not too sure about pebbles. All the good pebbles are still under a metre of snow down by the riverside. Have to leave that for late spring.
I love tweaks. They're my reason for living. I want to try out every last damn one of them. Drives my partner crazy. She just shakes her head. But I call it "Research and Development" so she lives with it.
The day that something in audio can't be improved somehow is the day I'll buy an MP3 player and give away all the gear I own.
And now - I need to figure out out to re-wire the Cornwalls and add some dampening on the woofer and back plate, turn the ST-70 into a triode amp, try to build some silver ICs for the Thorens, make some more DIY rollerblocks, don't need any more sandbags, need to find some rope caulk...
and make some notes so I can tell all about it on March 29th!

That's how you know she's really a witch.

Thin air?
what kind of idiot would try to prove that a little jar of brilliant pebbles don't make a difference?
...suggests size likely matters, without one lick of experience, is my best guess.
So, you're implying that the size of the jar of pebbles might not matter? What if there are 20 50 gallon drums of pebbles in the room? Would that make a difference?
Probably not. ;-)
According to Mapquest you're 619 miles away from me. Last night while listening I came to the realization that your brilliant pebbles were improving my system. I now know from personal experience that they have a range of at least 619 miles. If you don't have any experience listening to brilliant pebbles from 619 miles away you can't doubt the validity of my claim because you don't have the necessary experience. In fact, I believe that brilliant pebbles become especially potent in the 6 to 7 hundred mile range.
...there slick. If you should ever become too annoying, I'll be sure to flip you off. ;-)
