We are contemplating having a stone surround installed to replace the very generic marble surround the original builder put in. We have interviewed two masons, neither of which have made me confident that they would do a good job and/or understand the structural limitation of my house.Anyone done this? If so, how did it come out? and what to watch out for?

Definitely !!! Nothing beats stoned fireplace surrounds. Mine are made from from ASBESTOS so they won't burn up. I know it's carcinogenic, but hey....what's a little cancer when your talking about audio. Stoned fireplace surrounds made from asbestos are hot, totally smokin' !!! They really fired up the sound of my system. They create a nice smokey sound, with alot of popping and crackling like a good stoned fireplace surround should have. When you tap a good stoned fireplace surround it should make a sound like "BONG". The cables should be treated with twisted paper.
The best music to play on them is "The Doobie Brothers".
OK, I'm done.
NEXT. Come on guys....offer up lots of expert advice here.
Stoned fireplace surrounds are a great idea. You want to make sure the left, center and right channels are at the same height for best dispersion. Plus, if your fireplace is truely surround, you will have to have metal chairs with no fabric to withstand the heat. But it adds a new dimension to THX. If you're like me (which, hopefully you are not), you will find yourself spending less time enjoying an actual fire in the fireplace and more time getting in touch with the music. Good luck!
