I'd sure like to know about the dozen+ dealers you hang out at who are so good. Do you travel and visit hifi shops in various places? I'm in NYC and there ain't a dozen+ hifi dealers here, including nearby NJ. All I can say is that I find it surprising - to say the least - that so many dealers apparently like you hanging out in their stores. What does your hanging out actually mean? Have you gone back for repeated "hangs" without buying? You've auditioned components/spkrs at over 12 dealers? Do you just wander around stores without talking to owners/sales people?
I too have had some good experiences at dealers. I "hung out" repeatedly at ONE when I first got into hifi because I lucked onto a knowledgeable salesman who educated me and spent time talking with me and demo-ing for me far beyond what was required to make a sale. But at least half the dealers I've been to have been so lame that I'd never buy anything from them. I've sure as hell not run across 12+ I'd want to go back to.
Follow Ups:
I live in the Phoenix area.Dealers I frequent are
Arizona Hi-Fi
Esoteric Audio
Dedicated Audio
L&M Home Entertainment
AudioNutOther dealers I've used over the years -
Sound Cellar - Flagstaff
Bills Audio - Flagstaff/Phoenix
Wilson Audio - Tucson
Listening Post - Tempe
Sound Emporium - Tucson
Tucson Stereo
Sound Advice - Phoenix
Jerry's Audio
Sound's Like Music - PhoenixThis is just off the top of my head - there are others. There's only one shop, Mesa HiFi, that didn't treat me right. But even then my experiences weren't as bad as what many audiophiles seem to experience when they visit audio shops.
Its kind of strange that we really don't have many dealers in NYC considering the population, and some of them are definitely off-putting. At some well known dealers here I've found a substantial % of the salespeople to be so ignorant that actually learning something about hifi from them is out of the question. Nevertheless, even at notorious Singer I was treated well by a particular salesman I dealt with several times. In general though its kind of a crap shoot here.
Funny though I've had good experiences with at least 3 dealers in other states as well - so I know Phoenix isn't the only place being well served. When I travel I prefer visiting record shops - though there have been out of state equipment dealers I've visited in the past and others I would like to visit in the future.
