There seems to be a glut of these guys selling speakers these days. Almost exclusively direct Internet sales. Some of them have discussion boards on a few of the other audio forums where they market their products. Everyone gushes about the beauty of the _cabinets_ and posts nicely photographed pics of the exotic veneers and hand rubbed finishes.Given a choice, would you rather have audio speakers designed by a woodworker or a coffee table built by a speaker designer?

Would rather have a pair of his Waveform 13s though :)
Note that most of what's involved in manufacturing loudspeakers is production, not design.Expertise can be bought, or at least rented. Engineers can be hired to design the hard parts, like the crossover - which in most cases is the hardest part to get right. But once the design is finished, all that's left is production. Oh yeah, and marketing.
So there's a pretty good chance that many of these woodworkers are building very competently-designed speakers.
I absolutely concur with your comments, and would add that craft is an area of expertise that is not exactly common.Although there are a few, not everyone who designs a speaker can actually build it.
When you find a good competant craftsman, especially one you can communicate with, you DON'T want to lose him. Believe me.
As for the original post, I would use care to determine what parts these guys use. Drivers and x-o components. Then look at the aesthetics and craft of the product.
What's up with all the fires up there?
Is that how the RDA works in Preston?Later

Hi Dave,Good to hear from you!
Are you in the Salt Lake audio club? I tried e-mailing them using the address on their website, but got no response. Maybe somebody told 'em about me.
About the fires, - yeah when it gets cold here we just burn a building and stand around it to keep warm. We got plenty more left to go.
Hi DukeNo, I don't belong to the club. I may know some of them though. Josh and I have a loose group of esoteric tube freaks that we associate with and occassionally we get together to listen to something.
One of these days I will make good on the invite.
Need some marshmallows?
I design -prototype they build.I do have a woodworker he does all of our turned solid hard woods, guys very old does great work.So I would say table built by speaker designer for I have to teach all who do cabinet work for me the diferance between loudspeaker cabinets and kitchen cabs, big diferance in construction;) takes me much time and cash to get them up to speed, once there you dont want to lose them;)
!
some imported parts but if you want to take my coffee system to market in china I get 40% ;)
That's pretty much the process I use, whether I start out planning to or not.Anybody wanna buy a great-sounding pair of tall, rectangular coffee tables??
Duke how about a coffee table with dual amplified aura 15in woofers and the top could be large dual NXT panels, whole top could fold up for listening down for coffee;)Oh and side mounted mag racks for your iron horse, listener, mad magazine collection;)
Oh yeah!Hey, wait a minute... who told you about the Mad Magazine collection??
"...a coffee table built by a speaker designer?"on how well grounded he or she is.
It is possible to find a speaker manufacturer who is a woodworker and competent with electronics, yet who is also a classically-trained musician who just so happened to fall into the speaker business. Then what do you do?I know of a few internet speaker people who should stick to coffee tables. By the same token, I know people who are the exact opposite.
