I just recently learned of this new universal DVD player. Priced at about $300 it seems poised to replace that 45A??? (Quite a bit smaller, though.)My question: Has anyone used one of these for SACD/DVD-A and tested its bass management capabilities? I'm curious as to what crossover frequency (or frequencies) it might use.
Follow Ups:
i have one, use it for regular DVDs and SACD in 2-channel. i'm very impressed by the sound, better than the oppos (i owned a 970, and did a side-by-side comparison). ergonomics/reliability have been good as well.
Did you prefer the Oppo or this unit for that?I may be interested in acquiring this player in the future. Oppo is getting some good reviews for cd & SACD playback for its cost and if the 46av surpasses it and is not a significant extra cost...
Interesting comparison to the Oppo. I don't think I can seriously consider an Oppo unless the $150 model is released in a black version. At $230 for the black Oppo (forget which model # is which), I'd be inclined to go for the Pioneer 46av, instead. The Pioneer is probably decent enough, though, I suppose in a way it might be analogous (sp?) to, say, spending more money on Bose brand speakers just because I think they look good and have a name brand. Not that other cheaper speakers with less familiar names can't be just as good or better, though. (For the record, I'm using B&W DM303's. Not that those are anything too special, just stating I'm not using Bose.)
...You'll want better bass management anyway. I love and still use my DV-45A every day but I bought a Outlaw ICBM for total control.
You might want to check them out.Good luck,
The DV-45a player one of the best buying decisions I ever made but there was a clear and obvious difference for the better when the ICBM was added. Now ALL the sources plugged into the system have excellent bass control, even the analog sources. For whatevr reason, ICBM's are no longer made by Outlaw. They can still be found on Ebay and Augiogon... often at premium prices.
The picture quality was poor for DVD, but for music, it was the most reliable univr player I have had, followed by Integra 8.5
Thanks for the input.I currently have a Denon DVD-2200 hooked up, but it's silver and I'm getting tired of silver. (Poor excuse to want to buy new gear when the old gear is still decent, I know. But I just don't think I can wait for that universal HD-DVD/BluRay/SACD/DVD-Audio/Video player to appear. And, with my luck, it'll only be available in silver.) I also have a Pioneer 563a that I used for a while. It wasn't the greatest, but it brought me a fair amount of enjoyment considering its price. I'd probably be willing to just switch back to using the 563a if only it weren't also silver. Oh, well.
The new Pioneer Elite 46av looks promising in that it's black and I think its small footprint would probably allow me to someday upgrade to a cheap HD-DVD or BluRay player for movies, yet still keep the 46av hooked up via the analog 5.1 for the hi-rez DVD-Audio and SACD.
