Not sure where to post this since this 'format' is neither RB-CD, DVD-A nor SA-CD :-) Many of you know that Classic Records have issued a number of great jazz albums on Digital Audio Disc, mostly 24/96 recordings and some 24/192 (these DAD's are DVD's with PCM audio only). These are (among) the best recorded digital discs around, and I am prepared to say that these can give most if not all of your SA-CD's a run for their money. Elusive Disc has the following Jazz titles for 14.99 and I just wanted to alert you to this - I bought the first 6 below and they are stunningly good, musically and sonically. Of course the 24/192 recordings of Cannonball Adderley, Coltrane and Muddy Waters have also been around for a while now and are equally excellent. Especially the Cannonball - you haven't heard Miles until you hear him on this disc, even in comparison with the excellent JSACD's.1)ART DAVIS/A TIME REMEMBERED (with Herbie Hancock and Ravi Coltrane)
2)HANK MOBLEY/ROLL CALL (with Art Blakey, Freddie Hubard, Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers. need I say more?)
3)ZOOT SIMS & AL COHN/EITHER WAY (with very cool vocalist Cecil Collier on 3 tracks)
4)FREDDIE HUBBARD/OPEN SESAME (with Tina Brooks, McCoy Tyner, Sam Jones!!)
5)KENNY DREW/UNDERCURRENT (Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes)
6)LOU DONALDSON/LOU TAKES OFF (with Donald Byrd, Art Taylor, Sonny Clark and others)7)SONNY CLARK/COOL STRUTTIN (a huge album)
8)DR. JOHN/PLAYS MAC REBENNACK (Southern piano)
9)DR. JOHN/THE BRIGHTEST SMILE IN TOWN
10)JIMMY RUSHING/GEE BABY AINT I GOOD ENOUGH ('Mr 5x5' was Count Basie's front man for years and an unbelievably fantastic singer)
11)JIMMY RUSHING & EARL HINES/BLUES & THINGS
12)JOHN LEE HOOKER/MR. LUCKY (you know the man)
13)JOHN LEE HOOKER/BOOM BOOM
Follow Ups:
I got em all except the Dr. John's. These DAD's are incredible. Using a dvd player as a transport and my Levinson 360S as the DAC, they sure do give SACD a run for the money and I think I like the sound of the DAD's better. There is a reason most remasters of old analog tape sessions are done at 24/96 now and dumbed down to red book standards for release as cd's. Jazz fans need to convince Blue Note or Mosaic to re-release all the RVG Blue Notes as 24/96 DAD's.
Sale??$15 is normal prices for DAD's including those you listed.H-DAD's 24/192 normal price is $20 for a single cd.No sale prices that I can see.The $15 DAD's have been $12.00 at Classic's Record's site in the past.Elusive,Acoustic Sounds and Music Direct all sell for list price or sometimes more if there is a shortage or out of print,Especially MD.JD
Versus what I have for SACD/CD playback which is much much better. This is why I haven't bought many of those in that format. That is a very good price though and thanks for letting us know. This format had been discussed from time on the DVD-A forum but got pushed to the back burner when DVD-A recordings became available (but we all well know there isn't many of those for jazz). My best bang for the buck has been Verve Master Editions, RVGs, Conns, and JVC K2s for jazz.
Mine is - but I'd have to concur with your assessment as I've played some of mine (I bought a bunch when Classic Records was selling them direct for $15) on different systems/players and on some of them they just sounded OK and others it sounded great. At one point I had a DVD transport going into my pre/pro and the chain of DACs piggybacked off the DSP did not sound all that great. I have an old DAC that can output 48k and I took the same DVD transport and had it going into the DAC at 48k and out to the analog input of the pre/pro and it sounded great.
Keith Richards and Johnny Winter, etc. on it? Any good?
Discs with 192/24 content are clearly DVD-A. DADs (DVD-V with 96/24 content) are closer to DVD-A than SACD because all DVD-A players play DVD-V but many SACD players don't play DVD-V or DVD-A. So the DVD Audiobahn is a more appropriate place to have posted this message.
