I do not find PCM beteer or worse tha DSD at the highest resolutions. It is more mastering than anything that makes a difference on my player. I have just given up on DVD-A because of the inconvenience, not because of sound. I am not buying GVD-A just fot the car.
Follow Ups:
I cannot say with a good D/A which would be better, but the problem is while there are a lot of D/A converters for both SACD and DVD-A, I've only recently discovered that just about all of them fail to truly extract the information off the disc. For when I finally encountered such performance (using a Xvid codec plugged into Winamp, via FFDSHOW), it was a totally different ballgame.....Before you buy any player, you should set up Winamp with the above-stated components. You will realize that dedicated high-rez players across the board, as of now, are a total waste of money. The chip D/A processors in these players are simply not doing the job properly.
I agree totally with your point that top quality mastering (and recording engineering) is a prerequsite to great audio reproduction. This is true whether you are talking about RDCD, SACD or DVD-A. And as I said in my original post, I own a lot of SACDs -- some are excellent, some no better than average. Yet in fairness I must admit that when I listen to the same title (Diana Krall: Love Scenes) on separate SACD and DVD-A discs, while both are outstanding, the DVD-A version is clearly superior (one of the best hi-rez discs I have ever heard). They both have excellent resolution, tonality, soundstaging, transparency and extention. But the DVD-A version is even more life-like, i.e. there is more of a sense of "presence" with the music due to innumerable micro-dynamic cues and a greater sense of "air". A head to head test is the only way you can resolve question, and unfortunately there are very few discs available in both formats.
HowdyAnd you have to be careful about which equipment you play them on when you compare. IMO Alex likes PCM over DSD and indeed in my experience PCM sounds better on his modded equipment than DSD. Conversely I'm a EMM Labs fan and tho PCM sounds great, DSD wins there. I'm getting my Denon 3930 modded by ModWright this week and then I'll see how it does PCM vs. DSD. But I already know that it won't approach my EMM Labs gear for DSD...
