The occasional necessity of a video display IS a major nuisance... I have found, however, a simple technique that works *most* of the time in getting to the 2ch section of DVD-A. You configure your player to default to 2ch audio playback, then when you load the disc, just put it in the tray and press "play" instead of "open/close". This works for most of the DVD-A discs that I have. Note, however, that some rebellious discs refuse to submit due to the mentioned variances in authoring. What player are you using?
Follow Ups:
My player is an APL Denon 3910, which I don't think can be configured from the player to default to stereo. But I'll try you technique in any case.

It seems pretty obvious to me! You just get the fronts with a hole in the middle. These are few, though. Most of the DVD-As that I like have a dedicated 24/192 stereo track... or 24/48, or well you know.
I have no interest in fold down mixes, ELP included.
