Arghh...I know there have already been a few posts about the Talking Heads Brick (and the problems with it), but this one is directed primarily at other Cambridge Audio 540D owners.I was so excited about this set coming out that I finally decided to jump into the world of DVD-A, so I bought the 540D, a switchbox, and even more cables. On first go, Natalie Merchant's "Tigerlilly" and America's "Homecoming" sound phenomenal; encouraged and excited (and realizing that I needed to buy it before the rest of my money evaporated), I went to the record store yesterday and picked up the Brick for $120. Like some inmates have reported on other machines, I was able to load the menu screens, but the second it went to play the MLP-encoded tracks (be it stereo or 5.1), the player froze up.
What I'm wondering is this; is there any chance of a firmware update that might allow 540D owners to listen to the Brick? I bought this player just last week from AudioAdvisor, so I'm assuming the firmware is pretty new on it, but I haven't been able to figure out how to check that yet. Also, have 540D owners encountered any other DVD-A discs that are mastered in the same way as the Brick discs (ie, totally won't play on the unit)?
I really like this player, but I'm actually thinking about returning it and picking up another player (no idea what at this point), just to enjoy this box set. Argh!
Follow Ups:
I also have a 540D, and the firmware issues are insolvable.
The ones I found were glitches between gapless MLP track points and a reluctance to access some menu content.Additionally, Chicago II did not work either.
Apart from that I had (still have) no problems.
It's been reduced to a video test system though, as it has 6 video decoders.I'm now running a Denon 2910 unit, and it plays everything.
Avoid the 1920, it has issues.
Avoid the Pioneer players too.

My Pioneer Elite DV-45a plays everything I throw at it, and plays them very well (an I bought it factory refubed for $180). It's not the greatest SACD machine, but I have the Modwright for that so I only use it for DVD-A.
I've got that player, but don't have the brick set. When I first got it last year, it wouldn't play any dvd-a's, and they had to do a firmware upgrade. Call AudioPlusServices at (800)663-9352 or visit their website and e-mail them. They handle "in warranty period" service for Cambridge players. Simon there is very helpful.Web address - http://www.audioplusservices.com/frame.html
Let me know what they tell you, as I've been thinking of picking up the brick and was unaware of any problems.
I'm sending the player back tomorrow morning. I got a great deal on a used Marantz 9500, and I'm going to be using that instead. Soon, "Remain in Light" will be blasting in full MLP 5.1 goodness.
Just got Brick yesterday, and DVD-A content certainly plays fine on my Denon DVD-A11 (a.k.a. DVD-5900 in USA).First impressions are that this is an outstanding set. In fact, I think it's worth getting a decent multichannel DVDA setup just to play it.
I had two Cambridge CD6s that never worked a month down the road, although they sounded pretty good for a $420 unit. I think that their QC is suspect. I see the Marantz units being offered by AA and they are truly Universal. AA should have a return policy, so you're just out the shipping back.
yeah, I'm thinking about sending it back; maybe replace it with a marantz 7600? I'm wondering if the marantz's redbook would be as good as my modded sony ce775...guess there's only one way to find out.
