How does it compare to what you've used in the past? What amp and speakers do you have? I read good things in a couple of magazines. Might just buy one.
TIA.
Follow Ups:
I have a Cambridge Azur 804C and I like it very much. I used to have Wadia 16i, and the 804C is much better in resolution and staging width and depth, it's more extended in high frequency but nor harsh at all. I also compare head to head with Ayre CX7e and it sound exteremly similar but the 804C cost less than half. So I bought the 804C and very happy with it.
I use ARC LS5 MKII or SP8 MKII preamp, and Classe CA400 power amp or two mono block HK citation II rebuild with Jim McShane kit, Speakers are Gallo Reference 3 or Eggleston Andra.
MJL,
May I chime in by asking you a question?I interested in the fact that you have used AR/Classe combo.
I have the Classe CA-100 power and am thinking that an AR LS-3 (or another Solid State AR preamp) pre might mate with the Classe better than the Classe's own SP35 or SP50 preamp.
What is you opinion of AR and classe together?
With Regards,
Mike
The ARC preamp work well with Classe, I have even use Cary preamp and drive the Classe CA400 directly with Wadia 16i, since it has a good digital volume control. Classe power is not picky on preamp at all.
It's the "sound" of which preamp you like. I used to be a "true" believer, but I give it up since there will never be 100 "true", and I am not a audio researcher, I really like to enjoy great music, and I need a good system to bring the music to me and please my ear. So I turn into a "beauty" beliver.
If you like to add a preamp into your system, I will suggest tube preamp, because it balance out the SS power amp, and add the warmth, air and image depth into your system.
I found that it the best to your advantage to select a full balanced pream to connect to the Classe with balance XLR cable. (BTW, I don't believe those high price tag cables)
ARC LS5 MKII, LS15, LS16, and Cary SLP2002 all are full balance preamp. look for those preamp on the used market to save some money. ARC LS3 and LS3B are not a full balance design, LS3B only has balance XLR out put.
The most important is which preamp please you ear!
I'm curious about the whole 840 line of products. I've only seen "professional" reviews, perhaps because it hasn't been out long enough.I recently had to send back a b-stock 640v2 and I'm waiting for the new one to come in.
