i am new to high end audio, and sadly cannot afford an amazing CDP
i am looking for a DAC for my PC and my cheap standalone CDP that will be used as a transport, which one is the best one for 400$ or less, and by the way,i read that a DAC costing 400$ more or less, can perform as good or better than a 1000$ CDP,is this true?
thank you.

Yeo can make a Monica DAC for you for ~$300 or less if you can do a little soldering and install the PCB in your own box.I would spend a little extra coin and replace the 'lytic output caps with oilers/film/etc.
The Monica is a NOS DAC and sounds quite enjoyable. It lacks a little detail and space compared to my RAKK, but you can listen to plenty of CDs on the Monica without getting fatigued.
nothing to see here...
That was the "golden age" of DACs in my opinion. A lot were built and so a good one should be easy to find.
Some (myself included) think the DACs from that period are as good as the new ones available today.
Sorry I did not recommend one. I do not know the prices of good used ones. I've been using a Parasound D/AC 1100HD for ten years. I'm more of a vinyl guy so I feel no need to replace it.
If you look you may be able to find a Muse 2 Dac for $400. It was a great dac even by todays standards.
