Before my wife and I had our first child (who is now 19 months old), I went from listening to about 2 to 4 hours of music a day to nearly nothing since our little 'Sophie' came into the world. Newborns have a way of taking up most of your 'free time', as some my know. Now that I have a bit more time to get back into listening, I have decided to replace the 'weak link' in my 2-channel audio system, mainly my Denon DCM-370 CD player. My other decent components are a 'Sound Valves SV-100 JFET preamp', a McIntosh MC162 amp, a Velodyne sub, and Magneplanar MG12/QR speaks. I have budgeted about $300 to $600 for a CD player to make my system 'come alive' even more. What current makes/models should I look at? ANY advice would be greatly appreciated, given i've been 'out of the loop' as a full-time, stay-at-home dad! Thanks a lot!
Follow Ups:
See my post above i paid £60 an excellent cdp
that kills all the SB(s) and other delta/sigma
stuff.
An outboard dac just might give you what you need for now and also set you up for computer serving in the future if you go that route. In your price range there are many choices.Research upsampling vs non oversampling (NOS)and you will find many opinions and examples of dac's to consider.I have an earlier Music Hall cd25 and when I added an inexpensive NOS dac it made a big difference in taming the the digital nasties and if and when I go the computer route I will already have a decent dac.Hope this helps and good luck. Richard
Several places will let you demo one for 30 days (music direct, etc)
Thanks for the responses. I don't have all the time to convert my many CD's to put in a server type environment, so I wanted to get a better CDP. I just bought a 'Cambridge Audio AZUR 540C v2' CD player with the Wolfson 96kHz/24-bit DAC, thinking it would surely trounce the 5 year old Denon DCM-370. In the meantime, yesterday someone e-mails me information about a simple mod I can do for the 370, which I performed (disconnecting the cable going to the headphone jack, which introduces distortion even to the analog output jacks). The results were pleasantly surprising... the 370 sounded MUCH better with the mod! I compared the now modded 370 to the AZUR 540C, and DID NOT HEAR ANY DIFFERENCE!!!!! So, for now, i'm keeping the modded 370 since I don't know if I can do better soundwise in my tight price range. High-end (or at least, 'higher end') audio on a budget is always challenging, but fun!
couple hundred over your budget... I've heard/read nothing but great things about them.
Don Allen modified Philips CD changer.... That would still be my rec if you put an extra zero on your max price.....
Naww Mate you really NEED a $10,000 CD player to get the absolute best out of your $10 mass market CD recording.
Sell the Kid and buy that Dream machine.
Nothing has made my maggies sing like going the computer route. Well, once I had a great amp that is.The pc is the future, and cds really suck once you don't have to deal with them.
Yet another thing to keep little sophia away from...just store them in the pc and put the originals in the garage.
..that has been modified by Bolder Cables. Sounds great even with my modest Panny XR55 - 'poor man's TACT'. No more of these polishes, mats, rewriting CDs with black CDs, isolation for CD player etc !! Also, as Rio mentions, the DVD player can play a CD, SACD or DVD-A (oppo 970 - amazing value for $150) whenever I want or if I have not ripped that.
Word.iTunes is the greatest thing to happen to music that I can ever recall.
CD's do suck. Maybe you just don't know that until you start to live without them. I could never go back and I cannot imagine wasting money on a CD player at this point.
If you would have made statements like that when I was still using cds, I would have thought you were nuts, and "whats the big deal? I can get up and change the cd....".But now, years later, I wondered how I ever listened to music.
I have had a few jobs like that and relationships, and the dishwasher and owning a house, where you look back and wonder how I ever managed to put up with that crap, or did without the device that solved the challenge.
Yes, I agree...no way I am buying a cdp ever again.
The future slowly creeps forward. Did you see that emi is offering their catalog in itunes now?
My suggestion is to stay away from todays cd players in that price range. Why not just keep the Denon as a transport and get an older good used dac. There are lots of options within your price range.
to eliminate the CDP altogether, and go with something like a Bolder or RWA modded Squeezebox 3...or a USB DAC such as:Nixon USB Dac
USB DDDAC (assembly req'd)
MHDT Paradisea+No more CD storage. Jukebox/playlist. Remote. Or use DVD player as the occasional transport. In your price range there are a lot of compromises and one of the above is likely to provide better sound.
