I am thinking about trying one of these, anyone here point me in the right direction. I will be using it with my Sony CDP.
Follow Ups:
... and vice versa. Some of the most tube sounding DACs are actually fully SS devices, such as Electrocompaniet ECD-1.Lots of SET lovers use 47 Labs or Altmann Atraction DACs, all of them SS.
There are so much more important things in a DAC than an output buffer that it's actually irrelevant if it is tubed or not.
The best one I know is a low production one made by GeorgeMark audio. It has a volume control and an extra high level input so it can be used as a control amp too. Basically it is similar to an improvement on the older Melos DAC and high level. But it is costly, around $5000 I believe. You might also look for a used late Melos DACs. That should be awfully good also and a lot less costly.
the Sonic Frontiers SFD-1 or 2 comes to mind.
Used would be fine.
If you're interested in building one yourself then I would recommend the Audio Note DAC Kit 2.1 - I've built and reviewed one myself - see the link below
You might look into the MHdt Laboratory Paradisea DAC. Non-oversampling with a tube output (5670/2C51/6385/396a type tube). They can be found on ebay from time to time as that is the only place they are sold. $499 plus shipping from Taiwan. I've had one for a couple of months and like it but I can't make any comparisons as it is the only DAC I've used. There's a fairly long thread (32 pgs.) on AudioCircle about the Paradisea that can be found at the link below. Probably the most comprehensive information about it.
Not sure of your budget, but a Monsarchy M24 comes to mind, $980 new.
