Hi Inmates,As I am located in a rural area, access to a variety of gear is limited, and so I have found this site a godsend as I have built my system mostly by trolling Audiogon.
A Rega Apollo has replaced my Cal Labs CL-20 which was linked to Camelot Dragon Pro II jitter/resolution enhancement device, Arthur v3 MKII DAC, and a mini Dragon jitter filter. I2S connects used on the Camelot gear. The Apollo as a stand-alone was more musical and detail extraction was about even.
Of course, give a guy some idle hours and you have to fiddle, right? So, this weekend, I connected the Dragon Pro II and Arthur to the Rega. There is no doubt this setup extracts more detail and adds focus. Of course it not as forgiving as the Apollo. Vocals sound better on the Apollo but the Camelot gear is more dynamic and tighter. I might be giving up a bit of blackness, though.
It's the old struggle for balance between musicality and the analytical. So, looking down the road, where do I go? I like the idea of simplicity. I think a Rega Saturn has possibilities based on the excellence of the Apollo. But at $2,400, now we're getting into used Wadia territory. Do I get something new? Something Modded?
Ideas? Hints? Got the number of a good shrink?
Otherwise the base system is:
Symphonic Line Kraft 250 Class A monoblocks
Symphonic Line Die Erleuchtung tube preamp
Meadowlark Hot Rod HeronsUncle Rube needs your input.
Thanks!
Follow Ups:
To squeeze a little more from my Apollo I added a MIT zcord II power cord and Chord Chorus ICs. I bought both on Audiogon and paid a little over $200 for the pair. They have great synergy with the Apollo and have keep me content.
while stil keeping the musical sound of the Apollo with a simple power cord upgrade...the 'Tibia' sold by Naim dealers...$25.00. May
not be the answer you were looking for, but cheaper than many other
upgrades and definitely cheaper than a shrink! Happy listening!
a bit off to the side here, after seeing the Naim cord,i wondered if it just a knockoff of the Volex cords that people use and is alot cheaper and has good sound.
Do the AB.
