One thing to consider with cd vs. download is the long-term storage of this music. We all have had instances of data loss on our computer at some point, whether due to hw problems or carelessness or whatever. What happens as technology changes??? What do you do when you get caught in the constant upgrade cycle? What will you do when Bill Gates decides that Rev A should now be called WOW! and btw, it isn't backwards compatible? And what happens when Bill has a pissing match with Steve Jobs?I still have all my LPs from my 60s/70s college days. Will you still have all of your digital downloads?

You are right, a prudent backup strategy is definately called for.BUt companies should help on this.
I mean more and more programs are downloadable, and I am sure there are contingencies in place.
I'm not as optimistic. My kids are downloading music all the time, and some of their friends are spending big bucks on iTunes downloads. All they've bought though are files on a hard drive, and while they can be transferred, the transfers are limited, at least according to the Apple agreement and protection. Will it be possible to play a 30 year old downloaded song on the new hardware/software in 2037? I'll see you on the dark side of the moon, too. (My DSOTM LP still plays, but the DVD-A sounds better.)
That is a good point. But THe wav versions should play that far in advance. Or in a format that the wavs can be converted to...
