Seems true. Found an early 1995 Oct. Playstation 1.Plugged it in today, and listened for 2 hours. This short review is written without any serious breaking-in or burning in and the PS1 probably was not plugged in for years, so I am expecting better sound after couple days of continuous burning in.
Anyway, to cut short, the sound is actually very good. I am not sure if it's $6000 good, but it's definitely 100x better than the $25 I paid.
The sound has a bit of analog flavor, with a very sweet midrange. Perhaps the high frequency could have been better but it is definitely going to shame a lot of high-end CD player.
The original PS1 has a separate Audio RCA (L/R) connection, later units use a break-out cables. Made in Japan, Model number should be SCPH-100x (x is 1 in the US, other numbers for different markets).
Negative - one thing I notice is that it's very susceptible to vibration. Whether it's my unit, I don't know, but just knocking on the cover I could make the CD skipped. Also, on less then pristine CD, there is some background noise (vinyl like quality??).
Definitely a keeper. I will probably look further into modifying the unit.
Follow Ups:
Powered up for 4-days non-stop. The sound became more organic, and the one-note-bass was less obvious. It's extremely musical and very enjoyable, and I thought, this is 'damn good'.Then, I put the same CD in my reference Marantz SA11S1, nope, the SA11 is altogether a different class. More detail, more musical, massive dynamics.
Hi Busybusy,
I tried to send you an email via the link in your asylum profile but it was returned as undeliverable. If you are so inclined, perhaps you could check your profile and make sure your email address on file is current and correct. In the alternative, you could send me a blank email using the link in my profile and I could reply to that. Thanks.
Checked out the link posted by pilot232, I am able to:1) Modified the output stage - bypassing all the unnecessary pieces so the DA chip directly drives the RCA connector with a single high quality capacitor in the signal path.
2) Re-align the laser.
Skipping and sensitivity to CDs is now history. The music takes on characters of high-end CD Player. The deepest bass is the weak point at the moment, and I think it's due to the power supply not stiff enough. I should think about modifying the power supply.
is the realignment of the laser easy? is a feature only found on this unit?
Here is link to replacement parts for the playstation 1, including new laser modules, power suppiles and used consoles with new lasers installed.
The service procedure to align laser is via electrically setting the current, voltage and gain to compensate for the aging. However, serious mechanical misalignment, or more typically, CD loader worn due to heavy playing (you will see that the plastic rail physically loosing 'teeth') cannot be fixed via the electronic method. The procedure is in one of the URL buried in the DIYAudio link posted by Pilot232.
A couple of folks have asked me for a link to this. Below is the link for an adapter for $17.95USD that is the cheapest one I could find on the web (and cryoed to boot). Several other companies offer essentially the same thing (without the cryo) for $35-40. Be sure and order the polarized version (i.e., the one where one side of the figure 8 is round and the other side is square) as that is the version that will fit the PS 1.(As you may suspect, I have a corrupt deal with this company to rebate 5 cents to me for every sale that can be traced to this post and I plan to retire on the proceeds in the very near future.)
(Just kidding, of course.)
Wanna modify the Playstation 1? Use the link below to read all or part of a very informative 130 page thread on diyaudio.com.Before you embark on major surgery, you can do some relatively simple things such as isolating and dampening vibration and using a inexpensive figure 8 to IEC adapter that will allow the use of a decent detachable power cord (pm me if you want to know where to buy one). While good RCA interconnects make a difference, some folks like to use the multiport out because it bypsses a couple of opamps and other parts. However, you will have to kludge up a homemade connector for the interconnects. On the other hand you can do some internal mods to improve the line out through the RCAs. Some folks have built external power supplies to replace the internal switching power supply, update the laser mechanism, etc.
You can make a mini hobby out of this unit if you really get into it.
Cheers.
