HiThis may seem like opposites but I am looking at buying a transport to go with my Altmann Attraction DAC. Of those I have listened to so far the Oracle CD-2000 the benchmark but unfortunately not affordable for me at this point.
As an interim measure I have chance to buy at reasonable prices either a demo 47 Labs Shigagraki Transport or a used Teac VRDS-7 with Trichord clock mods that I could use as a transport only. Both transports seem to recieve good comments which makes the decision difficult
As I do not have an opportunity to audition either I would appreciate advice from Inmates who have expereience or knowledge of either transport to help me make a decision on which to buy.
Follow Ups:
I am currently using a Shigaraki transport with a MHdt Laboratory Paradisea DAC and I am liking the results. The Paradisea, like the Altman, is a NOS DAC so they are similar in that aspect. As to whether the Shigaraki and Altman will play well together I don't know. The Shigaraki does have an idiosyncratic nature (exposed disc, initializing each disc) but I think it's a great design and really like mine. As a result I've retired an older CDP and am selling the one the Shigaraki replaced.
I think the Shigaraki would be a more symbiotic partner for the Altmann, It requires a bit more work since you have to clamp the disc with the puck and initialize it prior to playing, BUT, the 47 Labs stuff has a certain "flow" that is most appealing.
The Shig is a top-loading transport only, made out of folded metal attached to a stone base. it does not have the locking capability of the VRDS which is a 'normal' cdp/transport. however, depending on your taste and preference, the Shig could be a good choice, but the cost.i did like it's reproduction when paired with its own DAC but has never heard it with another. it is rather queer to that if you load a CD, say, with 10 tracks, and you load another one afterwards with 15 tracks, the 5 tracks are not read unless you reset... annoying. also, the plastic remote is out-of-place for its price. in other words, i find it hard justifying the expense for this metal-sheet-with-stone ware, but i will definitely give it a try with my SFDAC-2.
the VRDS is adapted by Wadia, this i know, and very 'hi-end' in nature and functionality.
short: give both a try with your Altmann DAC & judge by ear (and looks).
