I am about ready to pull the trigger on Lavry DA10 dac and I could use advice on xlr/rca adapters and the correct digital cable.I would need to get XLR to RCA converters for the output channel, since I only have rca input to my preamp.
I will be hooking to a Oppo 981HD dvd player, which has a choice of S/PDIF (IEC-958) Coaxial or Optical digital outputs, so I need to decide on coax vs optical, and then purchase a particular brand of cable.
It will going into a medium quality hi-end system. I mostly listen to vinyl for music, but want to get a very high end DAC on the smooth side of things for the digital music and movies that I do listen to.

I don't know what to make of that thread. I've read it plus the stuff in the Lavry forums. What is clear to me is they think the DA-10 uses ASRC when the DA-10 documenetation claim it doesn't, and there are a lot of components in the DA-10 that aren't in actual use. Dan Lavry says that the people on diyhifi don't understand how the DA-10 works and he isn't about to disclose details since he considers it a trade secret.There are a lot of underlying commercial interests here - both Lavry's and the people trying to reverse engineer the DA-10 - some of them are working in China.
I know I will be rather upset if it turns out the Lavry uses ASRC etc. in all modes as the lack of ASRC in CrystalLock mode was a significant selling point for me.
Balanced carries two signals (let's call one "+" the other "-") and ground. For the standard Cardas (or other) XLR to RCA connectors one of the pins, usually 2 is +, the other pin 3 (-) is connected to ground.Instead of this configuration Lavry recommends to float the pin 3 of the XLR connector instead of connecting it to ground. You could built your own XLR to RCA "Cardas" adaptors or you could just disconnect pin 3 from ground in a commercial adaptor (difficult to take the Cardas apart though).
Finally instead of using the floating adaptors, there is a switch inside the Lavry DA10 that converts the output of the Lavry to single ended. Either way works, although for some reason Lavry recommends the adaptor one in the manual.

I might hesitate for analog, but for digital definitely check these. Seems to be high quality stuff - right materials, good build - this is what digital needs.

I built my own cables using Canare star-quad and Nuetrik gold plated connectors. There are a number of threads on headfi.com discussing this sort of thing.
I have a Lavry DA10 and love it. One of the advantages of the Lavry is it is not particularly sensitive to cables. The circuitry is exceptionally immune to jitter.I use coax for the input from my Squeezebox. The only catch is if your coax is more than a meter or so, you might be better off switching to the optical for longer runs.
On the output side, I run XLR to XLR using Belden cables I built myself. I don't have a particular brand of XLR-> RCA to recommend.
