I can't remember for certain, but I believe the rear controls were for connecting other marantz components together. As far as the remote control goes (I assume you have the small, flat one), I had trouble with it working as well. After some time, I have come to believe the issue is with the IR receiver on the unit and not the handset. How did I fix it? I dunno, I just kept moving it until it started working again. It almost acted as though there was a loose connection somewhere.
All in all I really like mine, it sounds very good and has been bullet-proof except for the remote problems...
Follow Ups:
If you bought an amp with it in those days then you could connect the CD player and the tape deck to the amp and then use the master zapper that came with the amp to run the other equipment as well. You don't need to worry about it. I forget the english word for zapper Remote!ah
Thanks for that. When you press the remote buttons well away from the CD player, is there any evidence it is working - lights on the remote etc?
I am away from my cdp right now, but I do not think there are any led lights or back lighting (its been a while since I used the remote). I believe the only way you can tell is to look for the IR laser to flicker in the end of the remote when you press a key--but don't hold it up to your eye! :)
